How Telstra Purple helped Mirvac transform from a static to adaptive, scalable and agile network
Mirvac’s vision is for an urban life that’s sustainable, connected and vibrant. This vision is brought to life through its 100+ buildings and spaces across Australia that are designed for working and living.
“Mirvac is all about curating the built environment and in particular creating a legacy. We see ourselves as custodians of the urban environment and while we are here we need to make sure we are creating great environments for the future generations. We do everything from acquiring land, planning a community, design and building it and then we operate it”
William Payne, Chief Digital Officer at Mirvac
In reimagining whole new ways of how people and its teams interact with our physical world and with each other, Mirvac was looking to embed technology and transform its previously static network and cloud infrastructure to a future-state, dynamic infrastructure.
The desire was to use this foundation to enable technology innovation, boost employee productivity, enhance community engagement in its spaces and ultimately drive competitive advantage and profitability.
“Our customer base and our employees were demanding more and we as an organisation needed to be much more agile to adapt, change and curate experiences that continue to set the bar”
William Payne, Chief Digital Officer at Mirvac
Key challenges
Migrating to a modern, cloud-based security solution from its current legacy perimeter security solution that was on-premise.
Enabling field employees to seamlessly access secure applications on the road or back in the office.
Enabling scalable, cloud-based productivity platforms to enhance employee experience and productivity, including MYOB, Office 365 and collaboration tools.
The fragmented management of its WAN, LAN and WiFi meant Mirvac could not get whole of business visibility into their network consumption and added delays to issue resolution. Over time, ad-hoc additions gave rise to unsanctioned applications and network infrastructure which potentially increased security risks.
Fragmentation also meant missing out on maximising the value of its various networks, with the added challenge of contended networks affecting application performance. For example, some data-heavy core applications were unable to run at the required performance levels when ported to a cloud environment accessed via the Internet.
“We were looking for a partner that could help us lay the foundations for the future and to reimagine the fabric of our underlying technology, communications and security for all our assets. We also needed a partner the organisation could trust and have confidence in that we could perform migrations without disrupting day to day operations.”
William Payne, Chief Digital Officer at Mirvac
Partnering through transformation
Telstra Purple stood up a proactive and skilled program management function to accurately scope, design and execute on the requirements, with teams that have proven experience in complex network delivery.
Telstra Purple designed the network and solution architecture, integrated backend systems, and deployed SD-WAN with subsequent roll over to a single, managed services engagement. Together Telstra Purple and Mirvac delivered the following:
An SD-WAN solution that leverages hybrid networks across MPLS and Telstra Internet Direct, plus the ability to tap into Telstra’s mobile network – enabling varied connectivity options for critical corporate sites, smaller locations and pop-up project sites where Mirvac is developing properties. It is a cloud-first, ‘evergreen’ network that’s software-defined, secure, simplified and scalable.
A managed mobility solution that frees Mirvac’s teams to work anywhere on any device, with robust security, controls, and deep data insights into user experience. Enhanced remote capabilities for ubiquitous user experience, simplicity and standardisation.
Migrated Mirvac’s legacy perimeter security platform to Telstra Purple’s cloud platform to enhance security posture. Implemented a suite of security options, including Security Incident and Threat Prevention services, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) protection, data protection, access control systems, content filtering and more. This is further augmented by annual security audits.
Unified communications using Telstra Calling for Microsoft Office 365 in the Cloud, including Meeting Room-as-a-Service that allow teams to meet face-to-face regardless of location or device (integrated into mobile workers’ devices).
Corporate and Retail Wi-Fi with partnership opportunities for business extension.
Scalable, agile technology infrastructure
Telstra Purple designed a scalable, agile technology infrastructure that enables Mirvac to deliver greater mobility and collaboration experiences to its people, enable data-driven decision-making, and provide a better service experience to its end customers. All underpinned by a flexible relationship model, ongoing integrated service management and a focus on setting up Mirvac’s technology for the future.
“You can’t achieve a transformation like this without the support and backing of an organisation like Telstra Purple who is going to help you through that journey with the proven experience and expertise. Mirvac had not been through a technology transformation for many years and Telstra Purple helped us develop trust and confidence and implement change within our organisation”
“Telstra Purple provided us with the right balance of capability and expertise without having to increase risk by working with multiple vendors. This way we could focus on our end customers and our key organisational project outcomes while Telstra Purple managed the integration and collaboration between the different project elements”
William Payne, Chief Digital Officer at Mirvac
Outcomes
Telstra Purple stood up a proactive and skilled program management function to accurately scope, design and execute on the requirements, with teams that have proven experience in complex network delivery.
Telstra Purple designed the network and solution architecture, integrated backend systems, and deployed SD-WAN with subsequent roll over to a single, managed services engagement. Together Telstra Purple and Mirvac delivered the following:
0
Telstra Purple deployed SD-WAN to 59 Mirvac sites.
0
Zero interruptions to business operations during the roll out.
Cloud 0st
A cloud-first, secure, simplified and scalable network
Deployment of SD-WAN to 59 Mirvac sites including data centres, head offices, and retail complexes with no disruption to operations.
Secure, scalable cloud connectivity improves collaboration experience, knowledge sharing and team performance.
Consumption-based models giving Mirvac visibility of cost management.
Improved agility. With SD-WAN Mirvac can now spin up new sites quickly. For short-term project huts where they’re undertaking constructions, they can leverage the coverage and performance of Telstra’s mobile network (via SD-WAN) to provide reliable connectivity for project teams to securely access business applications, wherever they reside.
A standardised portfolio of products and services removes complexity for ease of management and ongoing support.
Integrated managed services support offers Mirvac a cohesive view of its networks and IT performance to optimise for efficiency, whilst taking the pressure off internal IT teams, allowing them to focus on strategic imperatives.
