The nbn network
The nbn is Australia's new high-capacity broadband network. It uses a range of technologies to bring fast internet and high quality streaming to your home.
The nbn network will eventually replace ADSL and cable broadband connections almost everywhere in Australia. Learn about the different nbn connection types.
Cable internet uses coaxial cable to deliver internet and pay TV services to your home. Cable broadband connections are faster than ADSL, providing high-speed internet access.
Our cable network will ultimately be replaced by the nbn network in most areas. When the time comes, switching is easy with our nbn-ready cable internet plans.
ADSL broadband connections use a copper phone line to deliver internet to your home, while keeping some of the line free for your home phone.

Broadband is a type of high-speed internet access that connects homes or businesses. While Wi-Fi is a technology that lets you wirelessly connect your devices to a modem. They’re different, but they do work together.
Think about it in the context of your home. You get broadband internet access through wiring – either ADSL, cable or the nbn network – which connects to your modem. You can then wirelessly connect your phone, tablet or laptop to your modem using Wi-Fi.
Put simply, your modem connects to the internet using broadband, and you connect your devices to your modem using Wi-Fi.
Whether you can get broadband without a landline depends on what type of broadband connection you have.
You don’t need an active landline to get a broadband connection on the nbn network. In fact, the nbn network will eventually replace most of Australia’s existing telephone system. Similarly, cable broadband connections don’t require you to have a working landline.
But to get broadband via ADSL technology you do need a landline, because ADSL delivers internet to your home through your copper phone line.
All our internet plans include one home phone line as standard. So you can enjoy a landline at no extra cost, no matter what your broadband connection type.
Your broadband connection speed is how quickly data is transferred between your device and the internet.
Broadband speed is divided into two types:
- Download speed is how fast data moves from the internet to your device. Downloading activities include viewing websites, streaming TV shows and receiving emails.
- Upload speed is how fast you can upload data from your device to the internet. Sending an email or posting photos on social media are uploading activities.
Data itself is measured in megabits (Mb), and broadband speed is measured in megabits per second (Mbps). So the higher your Mbps, the faster your broadband speed.

Your broadband connection type, i.e. whether you have ADSL, cable or the nbn network, has the biggest impact on your home broadband speed.
Your in-home set up also plays a role, including the wiring inside your home and the location of your modem. Placing your modem in a central location away from other electrical equipment can improve your broadband connection speed when using Wi-Fi.
Broadband speed is also affected by how many people are using the internet at the same time, both inside your home and in your local area. More people using the internet takes up more bandwidth, which is why you may experience slower broadband speeds between the busiest hours of 7pm and 11pm.
