Internet Only plans bring more flexibility to your home network
These new plans put you firmly in control of your home internet needs. Bring your own modem and pay less while still enjoying the reliability and security of our network.

Reliable internet, your way
Bring your own (BYO) modem to one of our new Internet Only plans and just pay for the internet service. You'll still get the same reliable network, just with the flexibility to choose what works for you.

We offer two different types of home internet plans - Internet Only and Internet with modem and phone line:
- Internet Only plans are a more affordable choice. You can BYO modem or purchase a Telstra Smart Modem 4 separately, with no extras included. There are 5 different plan tiers to choose from.
- Internet with modem and phone line plans come with inclusions, like a Telstra Smart Modem 4 for use and other great features like mobile network backup, SmartFix self-repair and a home phone with included standard national calls. There are also 5 different plan tiers to choose from.

Our new Internet Only plans
If you already have a modem and want a simple and affordable plan, our Internet Only plans give you the flexibility to choose what works for you.
This means that you’ll need to bring your own modem or buy one separately. You’ll still get the same reliable internet connection, just without the modem included.
There are five different types of Internet Only Plans connected via nbn or Opticomm available:
- Basic nbn Internet Only: for watching shows on 1-2 devices, browsing the internet and checking emails.
- Essential nbn Internet Only: for making a video call while others game or stream shows in HD on up to 2 devices.
- Premium nbn Internet Only: for HD streaming and gaming on multiple devices, while others work, study and make video calls.
- Ultimate nbn Internet Only: for 4K streaming on multiple devices, seriously responsive gaming, ultrasmooth video calling and downloading and uploading large files.
- Ultrafast nbn Internet Only: for livestreaming games, watching shows in 8K while others stream in 4K and downloading and uploading large files on multiple devices.

Checking your modem's capability
If you’re thinking about bringing your own modem to one of our Internet Only plans, it’s important to check that it’s compatible. Your modem should support the speed you’re choosing and needs to work with nbn or Opticomm and match the tech type at your address (like FTTP, FTTN, FTTC or Fixed Wireless). If you're unsure what technology you have at your address, read our article on the different nbn technology types.
We recommend using a modem that’s less than five years old and supports Wi-Fi 6 or newer. This helps make sure you get the best performance and can move between plans easily.
Make the most of your FTTP or HFC connection
For our high-speed Internet Only plans (FTTP and HFC connections):
- You may need an ethernet cable with your BYO modem to help achieve the higher speeds.
- If you bring your own Telstra Smart Modem you’ll need a Cat5e or higher Ethernet cable to help achieve the higher speeds (up to 1GB).
- If your modem can support the speed upgrade, you may need to reboot it to activate the faster speeds.
What to consider if you bring your own modem
Bringing your own modem to an Internet Only plan can save you money, but there are a few things to keep in mind:
- You’re responsible for making sure your modem is compatible and set up correctly.
- We can’t guarantee your modem will support the full speed of your plan.
- Technical support is limited for BYO modems. You’ll need to use the manufacturer’s instructions and website for help.
- Features like password management and parental controls are managed through your modem’s settings.
- We can help identify network faults, but support for your modem’s software and warranty comes from the manufacturer.

It's built to work with our network, pre-configured for easy setup and can allow access to mobile backup and home phone features on eligible plans. You’ll also get ongoing support, software updates and remote troubleshooting, if needed.
