Wi-Fi vs. internet: what's the difference?
Not sure why your Wi‑Fi says it’s connected but nothing loads? Knowing the difference between internet and Wi‑Fi (or Wi-Fi and internet) will help you fix any issues faster.
What internet and Wi-Fi actually mean
Using everyday language makes everything feel easier
- Internet is the connection that comes into your home.
- Wi-Fi is the wireless signal your devices use inside your home.

Internet: your connection to the outside world
The internet connects your home to the wider online world.
It’s delivered through infrastructure like the nbn® network or Opticomm, 5G or satellite. Depending on your setup, it enters your home via a modem or another type of connection device like a router, satellite receiver or mobile device.
The internet lets you browse websites, stream shows, shop online and stay connected with others.

Wi-Fi: the connection inside your home
Wi-Fi distributes your internet connection wirelessly around your home.
Wi-Fi 7 is the latest generation. On compatible devices, it's designed to deliver faster Wi‑Fi speeds, lower latency and more consistent performance across multiple devices compared to previous generations of Wi-Fi.
Once the internet reaches your home:
- Your connection is received via your setup, such as a modem, satellite receiver or mobile network device.
- Your Wi‑Fi network shares that connection wirelessly to your devices.
Wi‑Fi lets multiple devices like phones, laptops and TVs connect without cables and operates as your own home network.
How do the internet and Wi-Fi work together?
To enjoy a smooth online journey, your internet and Wi-Fi must work well together. Issues with either one can affect your connection.
- If none of your devices can get online, it’s likely your internet is down. There might be an outage in your area.
- If your devices are dropping out or running slowly, your Wi‑Fi signal may be weak. A Telstra Smart Wi-Fi booster can help extend coverage and provide a more reliable connection, particularly in larger homes where walls and materials may block signals.
Telstra Smart Wi-Fi boosters only work with compatible Telstra modems.
Telstra Smart Modem 4 has you covered
On eligible plans, Telstra Smart Modem 4 can switch to a mobile backup connection if there's an nbn outage, helping keep you online.
