Your guide to Satellite Internet
Looking for a different way to get online? Satellite Internet is a powerful option, connecting homes in in many remote locations where other options may not be available.
From space to your place
There's more than one way to get online - Satellite Internet is just one of them.
Telstra Satellite Internet is powered by Starlink - a type of internet that connects to your home using a network of small satellites orbiting Earth. People explore Satellite Internet for all kinds of reasons, often when they’re looking for a different way to stay connected. Our Satellite Internet plans include a home phone service with unlimited calls to standard Australian mobiles and landlines.
Fair use policy applies. Month-to-month plans: Your plan and add-ons may change (including price and inclusions). If you don't like a change, you can change your plan or cancel your plan or add-ons. Satellite Home Internet availability subject to Starlink’s satellite network capacity.
How Satellite Internet works
Satellite Internet uses low Earth orbit satellites to bring the internet to your home. These satellites sit much closer to Earth than traditional ones, helping connect you to the internet without relying on nearby infrastructure.
Here's how it works:
- Your Starlink equipment sends the signal up: it starts at your home’s Starlink Kit which connects to a satellite orbiting overhead.
- The satellite passes it along: The satellite acts like a relay point in space, catching the signal from your Starlink Kit.
- The ground station connects it to the internet: A ground station is a big “internet hub” on Earth. The satellite sends your signal down to this hub, where it connects to the wider internet.
- Your modem brings it into your home: Once the ground station connects to the internet, it travels back through the satellite to your home. Your modem picks it up and shares it with your devices, usually through Wi‑Fi.
When is Satellite Internet the right option?
Satellite internet can really make a difference if you live in a remote or rural area where nbn® and Opticomm fibre or 5G home internet aren't available. Depending on where you are, satellite connectivity may be the most suitable method of getting online.
More than just internet
Our satellite home internet plans are designed for home use and include:
- A home phone line with unlimited local and national calls.
- 30 minutes of international calls each month.
- Aussie-based support when you need it.
Things to keep in mind
Every connection type has its limits and satellite internet comes with its own set of considerations. Take time to check them out so you can be sure it will meet your expectations of how you live and work.
- Location of your Starlink Kit must have an unobstructed view of the sky and be on the ground, or fixed securely on your roof. The Starlink app will scan the sky and assess the location to get the best signal.
- Speeds can vary. Data has further to travel and response times may be higher than fibre or 5G.
- Heavy rain or storms can affect signal quality. Light weather usually has less impact.
Setting up Satellite Internet
You’ll need a Starlink Kit, which includes your satellite receiver, router, a ground mount kickstand and all the cables you need to get up and running. When you order Telstra Satellite Internet, you can purchase your Starlink Kit through us. Your plan includes a Telstra Smart Modem 4, which we'll send in a separate package. If you cancel or change tech types within 24 months, simply return the modem or pay a $200 non return fee.
Already have a Starlink Kit? You may be able to use it with a Telstra Satellite Internet plan. The Generation 1 Circular Starlink Kit is not compatible. If you own this kit, you’ll need to select a new Starlink Satellite Kit.
If you're using your own modem, we will not know if it supports the full speed of your selected plan. Please check your modem’s specs to confirm compatibility. You should be able to find this on your modem’s label, instruction manual or the modem manufacturer’s website.
