Try not to blink

If you're a nbn Fixed Wireless customer, here's something you won't want to miss.

Over the past few years, nbn co limited has upgraded its network infrastructure for 800,000 premises throughout Australia. On 16 June 2026, its fastest Fixed Wireless plans became available at Telstra.

Explore our nbn plans

Fixed, uncorked

On 16 June 2026, we launched two new nbn Fixed Wireless plans, enabling the faster speeds.

  • Premium (Homefast): 183Mbps average busy period download speed (7-11pm).
  • Ultimate (Superfast): 298Mbps average busy period download speed (7-11pm).

The average speed information is an estimate only until we can confirm the speeds through testing and is subject to change. We’re still calculating the typical busy period speed range (7-11pm) for this plan.

Your actual user speeds will vary throughout the day due to things like including the signal strength or obstruction of the antenna’s line of sight to the tower, weather conditions, tower and network capacity and in-home setup; and actual speeds may be significantly impacted by congestion, particularly during the busy hours (7-11pm).

Getting the new plans

To get one of the new plans, step one is to check your address to see if it's available at your place. Head to our nbn page to do that.

If you're on one of our other nbn Fixed Wireless plans, you can change plans via My Telstra.

You might need to upgrade your Network Termination Device and/or Aerial to use the new Fixed Wireless plans. If you do, we'll let you know during this process. The equipment upgrade is free for standard installation only. Additional charges may apply if you require equipment to be installed in a specific location.

If you're new to Telstra, you can start the process by ordering a plan on our nbn page.

FAQs about Fixed Wireless

Fixed Wireless is used in regional areas where it is not practical to lay physical fibre to connect to the network.

A fixed antenna is installed on the roof, which receives a signal from your local nbn wireless tower. Internal wiring then leads to the nbn connection box inside your premises. It's also important to understand Fixed Wireless speed.

Other nbn tech types, like FTTP or HFC for example, are physically connected to the nbn network using fibre and copper cables (depending on the connection type).

All three deliver internet wirelessly – the difference is in how the signal reaches your property.

  • Fixed Wireless: uses a nearby tower that sends a signal to an aerial on your roof.
  • Home 5G: uses the 5G mobile network (like your phone) connecting to a 5G modem inside your home.
  • Satellite: uses a satellite in space that communicates with a dish on your roof.

When you check your address, our system will check if you need to upgrade your Network Termination Device and/or Aerial. This upgrade will be at no cost for standard installation only. Additional charges may apply if you require equipment to be installed in a specific location.

We’ll arrange the install with an nbn technician and share the info with you.

Depending on the modem you have at the moment, you may need to upgrade your modem to access the higher speeds that come with these plans.

Check with your modem's manufacturer if you're unsure. If you're using a Telstra Smart Modem 3 or 4, your modem is compatible with these plans (though you may still need a network termination device or aerial upgrade).

Things you need to know about Telstra Internet Only plans

Important

Your speeds may also be impacted by network congestion, as well as congestion at your local nbn Wireless tower. If the local nbn Wireless tower is experiencing congestion, you are likely to achieve download speeds of less than 6Mbps. This will impact your ability to enjoy some online applications such as slower browsing and/or lower quality or buffering for video streaming.

During typical busy periods, like 7pm-11pm in the evening, internet speeds can slow down as more premises use the internet at the same time. The more network capacity your service provider purchases from nbn co for your area, the less speeds will decline during these times.

We continually monitor traffic and adjust capacity to help meet demand from our customers. For Fixed Wireless customers, congestion at your local nbn Wireless tower will also impact typical download speeds.
