Mother’s Day FAQs

In Australia Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May each year.

The modern version of Mother’s Day originated in the United States when Anna Jarvis held a memorial service on May 12, 1907 in Grafton, West Virginia to honour her late mother. Anna’s mother had organized women’s groups to promote friendship and health.

Festivals celebrating mothers and motherhood had existed for thousands for thousands of years before the creation of the modern Mother’s Day.

These include the Phrygian festival for the mother of the gods Cybele, the Greek celebration of the goddess Rhea, the Roman festival of Hilaria, and the Christian observance of Mothering Sunday.

Many countries around the world still align their Mother’s Day celebrations with these older traditions.

Anna Jarvis, the founder of the modern Mother’s Day had a clear opinion on the spelling. She said, "Mother's should be a singular possessive, for each family to honour its own mother, not a plural possessive commemorating all mothers in the world."

No it isn’t. But seeing as Mother’s Day always falls on a Sunday, hopefully most Mums get the day off anyway.
