Sustainability at Telstra

We believe that Telstra has a real opportunity to play a leadership role in creating a more sustainable and inclusive world.

We are harnessing technology to create a better digital world and minimise our impact on the planet, as well as helping our customers and Australia do the same.

A healthier planet and more inclusive world are our two most ambitious goals and they are grounded in our commitment to doing business responsibly.

Doing business responsibly

For Telstra, doing business responsibly means doing the right thing: for our customers, our people and the communities we serve.

We are committed to acting responsibly and being transparent and accountable, wherever we operate.

How we're embedding reconciliation and First Nations perspectives into our organisation.

Creating a better digital world

We are working to create a better digital world by leveraging our advanced network and technology capabilities to connect people, businesses, and communities.

We work hard to connect people and support them to access the skills and tools to get the most out of their tech and stay safe online.

Social and community reports

Telstra's activities have a significant social and community impact.

Cyber safety is one of the key pillars of Telstra’s Digital Inclusion strategy. We want to ensure our consumers are equipped with the confidence, knowledge and skills to have a positive experience in the digital world.

Addressing the Cyber Safety Challenge: From Risk to Resilience (PDF, 2MB) is a report that describes the cyber safety issues emerging from a range of technology trends, how different populations are using technologies and the risks they face, and how we can effectively respond to each group’s unique cyber safety needs. We hope this report contributes to the broader, community-wide discussion on cyber safety.

Digital literacy is one of the key pillars of Telstra’s Digital inclusion strategy. We want to ensure that older Australians are equipped with the confidence, knowledge and skills to engage and participate in the digital world.

Evaluation of the Tech Savvy Seniors Program (NSW) — Getting Seniors Online and Connected: the Social Value of Tech Savvy, evaluates the program’s social and community impacts. We hope these reports contribute to the broader, community-wide discourse on the social value of digital literacy programs.

The Australian Digital Inclusion Index (ADII) is an annual study of digital inclusion in Australia, produced by RMIT University’s Digital Ethnography Research Centre and Swinburne University’s Centre for Social Impact in partnership with Telstra. The research explores Digital Inclusion across three dimensions – Access, Affordability and Digital Ability. It is a source of evidence and a guide for action.

The interactive data dashboards put the Index in your hands, meaning you can explore the digital inclusion questions that are most important to you and your community.

In 1996, we formalised commitments to ensure Australians with disability have access to communications, including the latest technological advances, by becoming one of the first major Australian corporations to lodge a Disability Action Plan with the Australian Human Rights Commission.

Our aspiration at Telstra is to build a connected future that is accessible to all Australians so  everyone can thrive.

This plan presents a collection of actions that we are doing as a business to encourage, recognise, and promote an active commitment to eliminating disability discrimination.

Sustaining our planet

We’re harnessing technology, digital and connectivity solutions to accelerate action on climate change and minimise our impact on the planet.

We are committed to leading by example and using our scale and voice to accelerate the transition to a more environmentally sustainable world.

We are also driven to make a difference beyond our business by encouraging and enabling our customers, suppliers and communities to do the same.

Environment reports

Our Environment Strategy provides a clear framework that allows us to build on and extend our programs so we can manage the most important environmental impacts across our value chain.

Our Environment Policy sets out our commitment to use our technology, expertise and scale to minimise our own and our customers’ environmental impact.

Telstra participates in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). The CDP is an independent non-profit organisation that requests and discloses, on behalf of a coalition of institutional investors and other stakeholders, the greenhouse gas emissions strategy and data of the world’s largest organisations.

Technology and telecommunications have a global impact and can play a significant role in decarbonising businesses and the economy. You can read about Telstra’s research into understanding the climate impacts and benefits of technology in the following reports:

Other Environment Governance documents include:

We participate in a range of industry associations. This document outlines our approach to those memberships and activities in relation to our environmental policies.
