Frequently asked questions

From the time you order your new service, connection could take two weeks to several months as we need to work with nbn co to make technical changes to the hardware installed at your address.

Yes, one of the first steps in the process is for Telstra to organise a home appointment with an nbn co technician who will perform the appropriate works at your address to complete the upgrade of your nbn network access technology.

Most nbn-compatible modems will work across different connection types. We will check the compatibility of your existing modem during the cutover to the new connection. If your modem is incompatible with the new connection, we will replace it with a new Telstra Smart Modem.

To take advantage of the upgrade, you will need to change your plan. Our plans are all month to month.  Any outstanding device payments will continue to appear on your bill. There will be no early termination charges.

When connecting to your new nbn service, you may experience a temporary disruption to your existing phone and internet services and any safety-critical equipment connected to them (e.g., medical alarms, monitored fire alarms or lift emergency phones). In case of an emergency, keep another form of communication handy, like a charged mobile phone. We can guide you through the options before we migrate you to your new service.

Under most normal scenarios we should be able to transition you across with minimal downtime. However, there is always a small risk that there will be a short period without an nbn service. We can set up a no cost number diversion to a mobile phone to ensure you are able to receive all your inbound calls during the transition.

Our smart modems have a built-in 4G SIM, so if there is an outage, it can switch to our 4G mobile network in minutes.

4G coverage required. 4G speeds capped at 25/5Mbps. Actual speeds may be lower.

Choosing the right location is vital for optimal FTTP nbn performance and Wi-Fi coverage.

What about the nbn utility box?

It's a key part of FTTP installations, typically installed on your home's exterior wall by the nbn finstaller.

Any tips for nbn connection box placement?

Avoid bedrooms, outbuildings, wet areas, or hard-to-reach spots. Opt for a clean area near a power point. Consider the Wi-Fi coverage impact and your Telstra Gateway modem's location.

Where can I get expert guidance?

For expert advice, visit telstra.com/nbn and search 'wi-fi coverage.'

What if I choose the wrong location?

If you don’t choose the best placement it can lead to performance and Wi-Fi coverage issues. Ensure the right location for a seamless nbn experience.
