How do I set up my
gaming console to
watch tv & movies?
It’s easy to turn your console into a home
29 Dec 2017
You can do so much more than play games
If you’ve got one of the latest consoles like Microsoft Xbox One, Sony Playstation 4, or Nintendo Wii U, you can set it up as a home entertainment hub with free-to-air TV, movies , websurfing and even surround sound.
The Xbox One with the Kinect sensor is really versatile, with an included Blu-ray drive so you can watch movies on hard disc. And you can enjoy all major streaming services.
- Connect it to your cable TV box to control how you watch movies.
- Use the controller, the optional Xbox One Media Remote, or the Kinect sensor.
Can I control tv and movies with Kinect?
Yep. Kinect not only lets you play games with voice and gestures, you can also use your voice to manage TV functions. There's no need to use the on-screen menu with your controller or remote.
What about Smart Glass app?
The Xbox Smart Glass app turns your phone or tablet into a second viewing screen. So while watching a movie or show you can;
- view information about it on your mobile
- use your mobile as a remote control and access the main menu.
The PS4 has a Blu-ray player built-in, and lets you watch all major streaming video services. The console is more focused on games however, so there’s no integration between your controller and your cable TV box. You need to use your TV's remote.
Nintendo Wii U
The Wii U lets you stream all major content services. You can also access the Nintendo channel guide to see what's on streaming video.
With the Wii's GamePad you can:
- Control your cable TV
- switch your TV on or off,
- adjust volume, and
- move from cable TV to games without needing different remotes.
You can use the large touch screen on the GamePad:
- as your main screen to watch streaming videos, or
- as a second screen.
The Nintendo Wii U doesn’t have a Blu-ray player built in.
