Frequently asked questions

The Telstra Watch Plan is a dedicated plan for smartwatches.

It provides a dedicated mobile number for watches so they can make and receive calls and texts without being tethered to a smartphone.

The Telstra Watch Plan includes unlimited standard calls and texts in Australia plus 2GB of monthly data plus data sharing.

(Data sharing creates a pool of monthly data across up to up to 20 eligible Upfront Mobile or Data Plans. You can manage this via My Telstra.)

It’s ideal for children, family members, or anyone who needs a simple way to call, text and get connected without having their own smartphone.

It’s not for people who want to share their current mobile number with their smartwatch – Telstra One Number does that for you.

You’ll need to be a My Telstra account owner and be on a basic or higher Telstra Upfront Plan.

To check your plan details, sign in to My Telstra and go to Services.

You sign up for a Telstra Watch Plan using the Watch app on your iPhone. Head over to our Telstra Watch Plan set-up guide for detailed instructions.

Your child will be able to call and message approved contacts (when connected to a mobile network and set up by the parents through Apple Watch for Your Kids).

They’ll also be able to share their location with family using Find My (when in an area with mobile coverage, location accuracy varies via environment and connectivity). You’ll need the following to ensure compatibility:

  • Parent’s iPhone: iPhone 11 or later (running iOS 14 or later).
  • Child’s Apple Watch: Apple Watch SE or Apple Watch Series 6 or later with GPS + Cellular capability.

They’ll have access to music streaming (subscription may be required), personalization options so their Watch feels like their own, and activity awards to keep them moving (they can compete with you too).

Your child doesn’t need their own iPhone. They’ll need their own Apple Account, though, managed through Apple Family Sharing.

To set up your child’s Apple Watch, you’ll need an iPhone 11 or later (running iOS 14 or later).

Using Apple Watch For Your Kids, parents can:

  • Approve contacts, so children can only call or message approved people.
  • Screen Time and Ask to Buy to manage purchases and how apps are used or download.
  • Use Schooltime to restrict apps and notifications during school hours (while also allowing for select communications to occur).
  • Set location notifications for when their child arrives at or leaves particular locations (this is dependent on connectivity, the Watch being charged and device compatibility).

An eligible Telstra Watch Plan is needed to make calls, send messages and share your location with an independent mobile number using Apple Watch when the watch isn’t connected to Wi-Fi.

Full functionality of Apple Watch depends on mobile network coverage and availability. (Some features of Apple Watch may function on Wi-Fi without a mobile plan.)

Satellite messaging and international roaming is not available on Telstra Watch Plan.

Network performance, coverage and speeds may vary by location.

Apple Watch can be a suitable first connected device for children, depending on what your family needs. It lets child children make calls, send messages and share their location (when connected to a mobile network) without giving them a full smartphone.

Some families use a kid's smartwatch as a stepping‑stone before a first phone – especially for commuting, after‑school activities and weekend independence.

Apple Watch is water resistant (up to 50 metres) and designed for everyday use – but it’s not indestructible.

Battery life varies based on usage but they usually need to be charged daily.

Eligibility requirements

  • You must be the Telstra Account Owner to purchase a Watch Plan.
  • You must have a basic or higher Telstra Upfront mobile plan.
  • You must have a compatible smartwatch which meets minimum operating requirements. You can bring your own device, or buy one from us outright.

If you don’t meet the eligibility criteria during activation, you’ll be prompted to change or purchase an eligible mobile plan.

Activation and setup

  • The Watch Plan is added during the smartwatch activation process.
  • You’ll need to sign in with your Telstra ID.
  • The system checks your eligibility automatically during setup.
  • Only one Watch Plan can be linked to a smartwatch at a time.

Phone number and independence

  • The Watch Plan gives the smartwatch its own new mobile number
  • Once activated, the smartwatch can use mobile connectivity independently when in coverage.
  • You can’t downgrade an existing mobile service into a Watch Plan.

Coverage and network access

  • Your plan provides access to Telstra’s 4G and 5G network, however, the majority of wearable devices do not support 5G.  Check your device specs.
  • Coverage and performance may vary based on location, device, network congestion and other factors. Check our coverage maps  to see what network coverage is predicted to be available in the areas where you intend to use your service.
  • Some functions may work over Wi‑Fi, but calls, texts and mobile data rely on mobile network availability.

What’s not included

The Watch Plan:

  • Doesn’t support international roaming.
  • Can’t be used for satellite messaging.
  • Doesn’t allow the purchase of additional international calling packs
  • Can’t be used to assign certain specialised services or add‑ons.

Plan prices

Your plan and add-ons may change (including price and inclusions), or we may move you to a new plan (which may cost more). If you don't like a change, you can change your plan or cancel your plan or add-ons. When you cancel, your service will be disconnected immediately. You'll need to pay out any remaining devices, accessories or services in full when you cancel.

Cancelling your plan

If you cancel your Telstra Watch Plan, you will not receive a pro rata refund for the remainder of your month.
