Nothing can prepare you for a cancer diagnosis.

I faced this challenge in November 2022. At the age of 48, I was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer. My life was full at that point, with my wife and three busy teenagers, and as a Workplace Sales Specialist at Telstra. Then, my life took a sudden and dramatic turn. 2023 has been marked by radiotherapy, chemotherapy and two surgeries.

But Telstra was prepared, offering me flexible work options and support throughout.

I was able to job share for the first six months. I stayed connected with my work and felt less isolated. I was able to reduce work pressure while undergoing lifesaving treatment. Flexible work arrangements allowed me to focus my energy on treatment, recovery, self-care, and family.

Through the Benestar Employee Assistance Program, Telstra provided me with a coach named Naomi, who became an invaluable source of support throughout my treatment journey. I truly valued the opportunity to talk with Naomi, an experienced and trained professional adept at helping individuals navigate life’s challenges. I gained numerous ideas on maintaining mental fortitude, and she provided me with insightful answers to many of my questions.

Telstra also offered physiotherapy vouchers, enabling me to establish a weekly Pilates routine that has become – and remains – a vital part of my therapy. Pilates proved to be beneficial for prehabilitation (preparing for treatment), rehabilitation from surgery and through radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and overall pain management. Research has shown that Pilates can enhance the quality of life and the functional status of cancer patients.

The vouchers helped me establish my treatment plan, which in turn, gave me the confidence and support to keep going. I knew where I was headed and what I had to do, and I had the support of colleagues and management right when I needed it.

Telstra’s supportive policies ensured that my treatment and recovery were the very best they could be, whilst also maintaining stability in my work and personal life.

It is interesting how one responds when facing trauma.

My mantra of ‘life goes on’ helped me push the limits of activity with three busy teenagers and two working parents, all while adhering to the doctors’ recommendations. With the unwavering support of my incredible wife, we aimed to keep things as normal as possible. I’ve learned so much about my family and myself through this process.

What next?

My experience brought a profound change in my perspective on life. It helped me focus on what’s important.

I aspire to be fitter and stronger in 2024.

I want to take my family on a holiday to create new positive memories.

I want to mentor and motivate my colleagues by sharing my story.

I want to grow in my position and develop my career at Telstra.

The compassion and empathy I received from family and friends I will be forever grateful for.

A few words of advice…

I want to emphasise the importance of getting checked – please, do not delay! I know that this can be challenging, especially with a busy family and work life. However, it’s crucial to look after your health. Be practical and proactive about your well-being. Focus on the positive aspects of life, no matter how small. No matter how light the activity may seem; it’s worth doing.

If someone you know is battling cancer, there is so much you can do. I cannot express enough how grateful I am for those who help me, and my family, by consistently checking in, sending messages of support, offering assistance and providing meals. I cannot overstate the significance of these actions.

Sharing my story is the least I can do to show my appreciation to our incredible family, friends, and colleagues.

I’m also deeply grateful to Telstra for the support they have given me.
