How do I check my BYO modem is compatible with Telstra services?
We can’t guarantee compatibility with every modem because not all modems are the same. Here’s a three-step guide to check if your modem is compatible.

Three steps to check your modem’s compatibility
Not all modems support the latest nbn® or Opticomm technologies – some hardware may need to be upgraded to be compatible with the network and connection points. Our nbn and Opticomm internet services are designed to work with most common modem routers.
Modems from other providers: If you’re using a modem provided by one of the retail service providers below, it’s highly likely the modem’s network configurations will work on our internet plans as we understand these providers use the same connection configuration as Telstra’s (IPoE):
- Aussie Broadband
- Belong
- Optus
- Superloop
If you’re using a modem from a different provider, go to your modem settings and check the network configuration it’s using. (Your previous provider should have instructions on how to access your modem settings.)
A good way to check your modem’s compatibility is to:
- Refer to your modem/router’s user guide
- Contact the manufacturer for specific compatibility details
- Look for an ‘nbn ready’ sticker on your modem
To check if your modem is compatible:
- Review your modem’s technical specifications
- Visit the modem manufacturer’s website or modem user guide.
Using a modem that doesn’t meet the necessary specifications may lead to reduced speeds or connectivity issues. See the table below.
Typical maximum speeds by Wi-Fi generation and age of modem
| Wi-Fi generation | Typical maximum Wi-Fi speeds | Approximate year of release |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) | Over 1Gbps | 2024 |
| Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) | Up to 1Gbps | 2019 |
| Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) | Up to 500Mbps | 2013 |
| Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) | Up to 100Mbps | 2009 |
This table is intended to be a guide only. Device capabilities may vary by internet provider or manufacturer.
To support the nbn technology at your address, your modem must:
- Be nbn-ready and able to support your nbn plan speed;
- Support IPoE connections;
- For copper-based connections (FTTB and FTTN), support VDSL2 connections and SOS/ROC; Visit the nbn website to learn more about VDSL2 Modems for FTTN/B
- For all other connections, support connections by Ethernet WAN.
