What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM technology available on compatible devices. Simply download your eSIM profile using a QR code in your eSIM Card, and we’ll connect you to the Telstra mobile network.

If your device is dual SIM compatible, you can use a physical SIM as well as an eSIM, and make the most of two mobile numbers on one device.

eSIM is currently not available for customers on the Telstra Upfront Mobile Plan.

What’s the difference between a physical SIM and an eSIM?

Physical SIM

A physical SIM is a plastic SIM card that you insert into your device. It comes in a range of sizes: standard, micro and nano.


An eSIM is an embedded SIM that’s built into a compatible device. Your unique eSIM profile is then downloaded using a QR code.

Compatible devices

If you see the eSIM symbol next to a device you're shopping for, it's an eSIM compatible device.

Need help setting up your eSIM?

Once you receive your eSIM Card in the post, follow these simple steps to get started.

1. Turn your compatible device on and make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi.

2. Use the camera on your device to scan the QR code in your eSIM Card. Then, follow the prompts on your screen. Or, you can do this manually in your device settings:

For iOS

  • Go to Settings, tap Mobile and then Add Mobile Plan
  • Scan the QR code in your eSIM Card and follow the prompts on your screen

For Android

  • Go to Settings, tap Network & Internet and then add Mobile Network
  • Scan the QR code in your eSIM Card and follow the prompts on your screen

Once you’ve set up your device, you’re ready to activate your Telstra service. If your service is already active, you can start using your new eSIM.
