What are my maximum speeds?
Your maximum speed ranges are estimated based on current information available. The speeds you’ll experience may be slower, particularly during busy periods, and can be impacted by things like the distance and line of sight between the serving mobile tower and 5G modem, number of users online, where your modem is located and how far you are from it, weather, congestion and your in-home set-up. Speeds will change over time.

No. You can set up 5G Home Internet up yourself in minutes.

  1. Place your Telstra 5G modem close to a window and plug it into power.
TIP: Use our 5G modem optimal placement guide to find your home’s ‘green zone’, where the 5G signal is strongest.
  2. Your 5G modem connects to nearby 5G mobile towers and you’re online.
  3. Start streaming!

These pro tips will help you get the best possible speed and performance from your 5G internet signal:

1. Find your 'green zone'

  • The ‘green zone’ is where the 5G signal is strongest in your home. You can find it using the live tool in our 5G modem optimal placement guide in the My Telstra app.
  • Place your modem by a window in your green zone.

2. Avoid obstructions

  • Try to avoid windows with buildings, trees or other structures outside that may block 5G signal.
  • Place your modem at least 3 metres away from large metal objects like fridges, microwaves and steel-mesh window security screens to avoid electronic interference.

3. Choose a raised surface

  • Position your modem on a shelf, table or other surface off the floor, and avoid placing it behind doors such as in a cupboard.
  • If your building has multiple storeys, find a location on the highest level.

To find these tips in our 5G modem optimal placement guide:

  • Sign in to your my Telstra app
  • Choose your 5G service
  • Go to ‘Improve your connection’
  • Then ‘Tips to improve your 5G signal’.

The quickest way to find out is to check your address now.

  • Availability depends on 5G internet network capacity in your area, not just whether you have 5G mobile coverage.
  • To help ensure that everyone gets a good experience, we only connect a limited number of customers per area.
  • If 5G Home Internet isn’t available now, it’s worth checking again regularly, because capacity can change.

Telstra 5G Internet may not be in your area yet, or there may not be enough network capacity to offer the best possible 5G internet experience. This is because:

  • 5G Home internet uses more 5G network capacity than a 5G mobile phone.
  • We only connect a limited number of homes to 5G Home Internet in each area, to help ensure everyone gets a good experience.
  • This means an area can reach capacity for 5G Home Internet even if 5G mobile coverage is available on your phone.

These are the average busy period speeds (7-11 pm):

  • For Basic 5G Internet the download speed is 25 Mbps
  • For Essential 5G Internet the download speed is 50 Mbps
  • For Premium 5G Internet the download speed is 300 Mbps.

These are the typical busy period speed ranges from 7-11pm for each Telstra 5G Home Internet plan:

  • For Basic 5G Internet the download speed range is 24 - 25 Mbps
  • For Essential 5G Internet the download speed range is 30 - 50 Mbps
  • For Premium 5G Internet the download speed range is 80 - 570 Mbps.

We’re still calculating typical busy period speeds (7-11pm) (averages and ranges) on this plan. The speed information is an estimate only and is subject to change. Speeds experienced may be slower, can vary due to a number of factors and will change over time.

  • 5G Internet performance can vary with factors like signal strength, network traffic and weather.
  • You should get a real-time estimate of the speeds available at your address when you use our address checker (if 5G is available to you).

No - there’s no lock-in contract with Telstra 5G Home Internet so you can cancel any time. If you do decide to cancel your 5G Internet within 24 months, simply return your modem in good working order or pay a $200 non-return fee. We’ll provide a free return parcel.

Even if you do use more than 1000GB in a month, you won’t be charged any extra fees. However your speeds will be slowed until your next billing cycle. We’ll give you a heads-up when you’re at 50%, 85%, and 100% of your data usage.

  • If you have Premium 5G Internet, your speeds will be capped at 25 Mbps download speed and 5 Mbps upload speed;
  • If you have Basic or Essential 5G Internet your speeds will be capped at 1.5 Mbps.*Refer to legal disclaimer

* 1.5 Mbps supports some ordinary internet activity (e.g. web browsing, social media, and data calls), although limited to a single user at any time and content may be slow to load. 1.5 Mbps isn't suitable for large file downloads, HD and 4K video or other high‑data speed applications like video conferencing or online gaming, and may not support ordinary use of internet‑dependent medical devices.

Yes. It can be a good idea to keep your nbn service running while you give 5G internet a go. This way you decide which service is right for you. Then once you’ve made your choice, simply cancel the service you don’t want.

  • Will getting 5G Internet automatically cancel my nbn? No. Your nbn service isn’t affected by the 5G service. You’ll need to cancel the nbn service yourself if you decide to switch to 5G Internet.
  • Will I be charged for nbn and 5G at the same time? Yes. You'll still be charged monthly fees for both services while they are active. So you'll pay for two services until you choose which one to cancel.
  • What happens if I cancel the 5G? If you do decide to cancel your 5G Internet within 24 months, simply return your modem in good working order or pay a $200 non-return fee. We’ll provide a free return parcel.

We don’t recommend 5G Home internet for serious online gamers. Why not?

  • 5G Home Internet can have higher latency than wired connections.
  • Speeds can vary, especially during busy periods.
  • If you need a stable, low‑latency connection for gaming, 5G Home Internet may not be the right choice.

No, because your Telstra Smart Modem only works at the home address where it’s first set up. If you’re moving:

  • Get in touch with us
  • We’ll help you cancel your existing 5G Home Internet plan
  • We’ll try to set you up with a new plan at your new address

Modem included for use with new 5G Home Internet services. If you cancel or change to a different tech type within 24 months, simply return your modem or pay a $200 non-return fee.

Yes - as long as the 5G network has enough free capacity at the time. What does this mean?

  • Higher speed 5G plans take up more network capacity or ‘space’ than lower speed 5G plans.
  • So while it's easy to change down to a lower speed 5G internet plan, you may not be able to change back up to a higher speed 5G internet plan later if there isn't enough capacity on the network in your area at that time.

This information is to help you to make the right 5G choice for your needs, not to discourage you from choosing a lower speed plan.

No, 5G Home Internet doesn’t come with a home phone line. It’s internet only. You should explore nbn plans with Telstra if:

  • You need a home phone line and number, or
  • You have devices that rely on a home phone line like lifts, medical alerts or security alarms.

5G Home Internet Plan

Service availability: Service not available to all areas or all premises. Initial checks may show you are eligible for this service however actual availability will be confirmed after order.

Voice services: Telstra 5G Home Internet doesn’t include a fixed voice service and you will not be able to use it to make or receive calls or support a lift, security or medical alarm.

Speed: Speeds experienced may be slower over Wi-Fi and can also be impacted by other factors such as the distance and line of sight between the serving 5G mobile tower and the modem, the number of users online, where your modem is located and how far you are from it, weather, congestions and your in-home set up.

Estimated average/typical busy period speeds/ranges are for new 5G Internet services only. Average/typical busy period speeds/ranges for existing 5G Internet services may be slower.

Data allowance: If you’re on a Premium 5G Internet plan and exceed your included data allowance, your download speed will be capped at 25 Mbps and your upload speed at 5 Mbps, and may be slowed further in busy periods until your next billing month. There is no option to top up your data or move to a higher data plan.

If you’re on a Basic or Essential 5G Internet plan and exceed your allowance, your upload and download speed will be slowed to 1.5 Mbps or below until your next billing cycle. 1.5 Mbps supports some ordinary internet activity (e.g. working from a web browser, emails, and data calls), although limited to a single user at any time and content may be slow to load. 1.5 Mbps isn't suitable for large file downloads, HD and 4K video or other high-data speed applications like video conferencing, and may not support ordinary use of internet-dependent medical devices.

Cancellation: If you cancel or change tech type within 24 months, your modem must be returned via our eParcel service (we will provide details in an email to you once you cancel) in good working order within 21 days of cancellation or you will be charged a $200 non-return fee.

Telstra Plus: Must be 18+ with an active Telstra-branded service. Points are earned on the cash component of eligible products purchased outright or on a repayment option, and service purchases (excludes cancelled, refunded, or returned products or services). Points expire 3 years from earning. Marketing opt-in required (preferences can be changed). Excludes Telstra Enterprise and Corporate accounts. See the Telstra Plus program terms and conditions.
