This will depend on the type of SIM you purchase. We have plans that last 7 days, 28 days, 6 months or 12 months.
If you are leaving Australia but would like to keep your number, you can purchase a Casual recharge at $74 which has minimal inclusions, but will last for 12 months. That way, you can use the same number on the same service if you return to Australia within that period. Please note that our Pre-Paid Plans are for use in Australia only.
You won’t need to cancel your plan. Simply use your remaining inclusions while you are in Australia until they have run out, or wait for your plan expiry date. You can remove the physical SIM from your phone or delete the eSIM from your phone when you no longer need it.
However, if you have set up auto recharge, you will need to cancel this in My Telstra online or in the app.
Yes, if you purchase an eSIM instead of a physical SIM, you can have both on your phone at the same time.
eSIM (short for embedded SIM) is a digital SIM that’s built into your device. eSIM allows you to connect to the Telstra network in minutes as you don't need a physical SIM card. It also allows you to add a secondary number so you can use two SIMs simultaneously in one device.
It’s important to check if your device is eSIM compatible, as some devices purchased overseas may not be.
| Brand | Devices |
|---|---|
| Apple | All iPhone XR, XS, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 models plus iPhone SE (2020 and 2022). |
| Samsung | All Galaxy S20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25 models plus Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip devices. |
| Pixel 3a plus all Pixel 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 models. | |
| Nokia | Nokia X30 5G. |
| Oppo | Find N2 Flip, Find X3 Pro and Find X5 Pro. |
| Motorola | razr 40 ultra and razr 40. |
Many eSIM compatible devices will display an EID number which is 32 digits long. However, there are some cases where your phone will not display an EID number, but still be eSIM compatible. We advise confirming via the My Telstra app.

Yes, you can keep in touch with family and friends overseas. A Telstra Pre-Paid Mobile Plan (excluding our $15 Pre-Paid Mobile Plan and Pre-Paid Casual Plans) gives you capped standard international call minutes to selected destinations, plus 100 texts to eligible destinations.
Countries are categorised into different zones, and included call minutes depend on your recharge amount and which zone you are calling to. For a detailed breakdown, see our International call rates for Pre-Paid mobile page.
The Telstra Mobile Network offers 4GX in all major and regional cities and in over 1,600 towns and communities around Australia. In other coverage areas around Australia, you’ll automatically switch to our fastest available 4G. Check our mobile coverage page.
Telstra 5G now reaches 85% of Australians. Compatible device required. Roll over unused data when you recharge $15-$74 before expiry. Unlimited calls and text exclude satellite and premium numbers (e.g. 19xx numbers), operator assisted calls (e.g. most 12xx numbers) and diverted calls. Our FairPlay policy (PDF 227 KB) applies.
Speeds vary for reasons like location, distance from base stations, terrain, user numbers, hardware/software configuration, download source and upload destination.
Download speeds are capped on our 4G and 5G network on some plans. Your capped download speed is the maximum potential download speed for data included in your recharge. Factors impacting typical speed include location, distance from the base station, local conditions, concurrent users, hardware and software configuration and download/upload destination.
An unlocking fee may apply for use with a non-Telstra SIM card. Check our unlocking information page. Limit 1 per customer and no trade sales. Blue Tick lets you know which phones are recommended for handheld coverage in rural areas.
