Faster internet speeds are coming – here’s how to access them

Soon eligible Telstra customers will start to experience faster internet speeds – at no extra cost. It’s part of a nationwide upgrade to wholesale upload and download speeds led by nbn co., and we want to make sure our customers are ready to take full advantage of it.

Whether you’re working from home, streaming your favourite shows, gaming online or running a small business, faster internet speeds mean a smoother, more reliable experience across more devices. And we know you need it – a 2024 survey revealed that people are connecting more devices than ever before, with an average of 25 devices per household, and demand for data is growing exponentially. Faster speeds will help future-proof households and businesses for what’s next.

Here’s a rundown of what’s changing, how to check if you’re eligible, and how to get the most out of your internet connection.

What’s happening with internet speeds?

From 15 September, existing Telstra customers on Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) connections with a Premium, Ultimate or Ultrafast Upfront Plan will begin to receive a free speed upgrade.  Customers should check their equipment, including modems and cabling, to ensure they are able to receive the faster speeds. More on that below.

It’s a solid speed boost too – up to five times faster wholesale download speeds on our Premium plan, and at least double the wholesale upload speeds across the board.

*We’re still calculating typical busy period upload speeds 7pm-11pm on this plan - the information here is an estimate only.

New customers can also get access to these faster speed plans from 16 September, and we currently have some special offers and promotions on our no-lock in internet plans

If you’re not on one of the eligible plans or connection types, you might still be able to upgrade your plan and connection type. Eligible customers can get a $0 nbn fibre upgrade to FTTP if they sign up to a Premium, Ultimate or Ultrafast plan.

Not sure what your connection type is? Jump on to our address checker and see if you qualify for a $0 nbn fibre upgrade (standard installation only).

While some small businesses will benefit from these consumer plan upgrades and faster speeds, businesses with more advanced connectivity needs should check out our market-leading Business Pro high-speed plans that are built for businesses.

More than speed – security, support and smarts

Speed is important – everyone wants a fast, stable internet connection. And we lead in download speed – we were recently rated number 1 by the ACCC for nbn average download speeds during busy hours.

But speed isn’t the only consideration when choosing an internet provider and plan.

At Telstra, we’re focused on providing our customers with a premium internet experience that offers extra security, a variety of support options and the latest in smart technology.

Enhanced security

Your home internet should be a safe space. That’s why Telstra blocks millions of cyber threats every day and monitors our network 24/7 to help protect you from suspicious activity. Whether you’re banking online or working remotely, our network is designed to help keep your data secure and your family protected.

Support when you need it

We know that when something goes wrong, you want help – fast. Telstra offers a variety of ways to get in touch and get support, whether you prefer in person or online. Customers can speak to a team member in stores across Australia, speak to someone on the phone, or get help online via Telstra.com or the MyTelstra app.

Smarter technology

Our new Telstra Smart Modem 4 is our most powerful modem yet, with the capacity to support our new high speed plans. It’s our first Wi-Fi 7 modem delivering more security, better coverage and the ability to connect more compatible devices in your home or business than our previous models. And when paired with one of our Telstra Upfront Internet plans, our new Smart Modem also includes 5G mobile backup, so you can stay connected in mobile coverage areas even if your fixed line goes down. Plus our AI-powered SmartFix can detect and help resolve modem issues before you even notice them.

Backup available with eligible plans only. Mobile coverage required. Speeds capped at 25/5 Mbps, except for Telstra Business Internet services. Actual speeds may be lower.

Your internet is only as good as your setup

Your internet experience depends heavily on your equipment and how your home or office is set up. A few simple tweaks can make a big difference in performance, reliability and coverage.

Update your equipment

To get the most from your upgraded speeds, make sure your equipment is up to date - this includes your modem, your cabling and your devices. The good news is, if you have a Telstra Smart Modem you will be able to access the upgraded speeds. All Telstra Smart Modems (generations 1, 2, 3 and 4) are capable of supporting 1Gbps wholesale download speeds with the right cabling and set up. You will also have been supplied with a cable to support high speed connections. If you use a different modem, you should check the manufacturer's specifications to confirm what speeds it can support. You’ll also want to check whether you have a Cat5e or higher ethernet cable connecting your nbn box to your modem. If you don’t, you won’t get the faster speeds. You can check this by looking at the small text written on the cable itself.

Modem placement matters

Your modem should be placed in a central, elevated location – away from thick walls, metal surfaces and other electronics that can interfere with signal strength. Avoid hiding it in cupboards or behind furniture. The more open and central the location, the better your Wi-Fi coverage will be.

Extend your coverage

If you have a larger home or areas with weak signal, consider using Wi-Fi extenders or mesh systems to help boost coverage. These tools help eliminate dead zones and ensure a strong connection in every room.

Check your connection regularly

Use tools like the MyTelstra app to run speed tests and diagnose issues. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s worth checking your setup before assuming it’s a network issue.

Faster speeds are coming – and we’re here to help you make the most of them.
