Mobile broadband plans and devices

First things first, what is mobile broadband?

In a nutshell, mobile broadband is a wireless internet connection delivered via a mobile network. In contrast, a fixed internet connection is delivered by a landline or cable network, or the nbn™ access network.

Like a mobile hotspot on your smartphone, mobile broadband allows you to connect other Wi-Fi enabled devices to the internet. And while mobile broadband devices can’t make phone calls, they generally provide a stronger, better quality internet connection than a smartphone, as they’re designed specifically for that job.

Simple set-up

To use mobile broadband, you’ll need a data plan with a SIM card, and a compatible device such as a SIM-ready laptop, portable modem or a dongle (USB modem). You can bring your own device or add one to one of our data plans.

What you won’t need is a technician. Setting up your service is easy:

1.       Insert your data SIM card into your mobile broadband device.

2.       Connect your Wi-Fi enabled laptop or device.

3.       Get online.

With the housekeeping out of the way, let's look at 8 great reasons to get onboard with mobile broadband.

1. Work from home, a park, a cafe, etcetera.

If you work from home, a mobile broadband connection such as a USB modem for your laptop or a portable hotspot for multiple devices can be a powerful tool, whether you’re video calling, sharing files or collaborating online.

You can use mobile broadband wherever you can access our mobile network in Australia. It allows you to take your work with you when you leave home. It can even help you maintain an internet connection around the home if your fixed connection is a bit slow or patchy, or if there’s an outage.

Having a separate mobile broadband service for your work also means you can use your home internet service without affecting your work internet service, and vice versa. So while your family’s watching videos or playing games online, you can use your own dedicated internet connection to do your job.

2. Give your home broadband a boost

Does your home broadband need some help? Mobile broadband can be a good way to supplement, or even replace, your fixed internet connection at home.

Maybe your connection is unreliable or sluggish. Or perhaps you want an alternative to the nbn™ access network. Or you might be unable to get a fixed internet connection at all. Whatever the reason, a mobile broadband solution such as a 4G compatible Nighthawk M2 or 5G compatible Nighthawk M5 may be the answer to your home broadband woes – depending on what mobile coverage is available in your area and device capability.

With mobile broadband, you don’t have to wait for your area to be connected; set up is quick and easy; and if you're in an area with good reception, chances are you’ll enjoy very competitive speeds.

3. Gaming at the speed of 5G

If gaming or 4K video streaming is your thing, or even just the thrill of a blazing fast connection, then a Telstra 5G Wi-Fi Pro or NETGEAR Nighthawk M5 with a 5G-ready data plan is for you.

Featuring dual-band Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi 6 technology, both 5G portable modems allow more Wi-Fi enabled devices to be connected and stream simultaneously, with minimal impact on speed or reliability. With increased capacity, you get faster speeds for high-end video streaming on your smartphones, tablets, and computers.

4. Keep the troops entertained

“Are we there yet?” Either way, it’s not a problem with mobile broadband. With the ability to support multiple Wi-Fi connections, the right portable modem (like the Nighthawk M2) and data plan will keep your family entertained for hours – whether you’re at the beach, in a tent, or still travelling to your destination (as long as you're in an area with our network coverage).

Depending on the portable modem you choose, you can connect up to 30 Wi-Fi enabled devices at once, including tablets, speakers and computers.

5. Wi-Fi you can travel with

Take your own Wi-Fi network with you when you go travelling, on Australia’s largest mobile network or overseas. Choose a lightweight, portable device such as the Telstra 5G Wi-Fi Pro and add it to a data plan, and enjoy a fast, reliable connection when you connect to our mobile network in Australia.

Your mobile broadband device and data plan can also be used in eligible countries overseas when you purchase an International Day Pass. Day Passes include a data allowance to use per day as well as unlimited talk and text. If you travel to a country where our International Day Pass isn’t available, you can still use your device at pay-as-you-go rates.

6. Renting? Keep things flexible.

If you have a short lease or no fixed abode, you probably don’t want a fixed internet connection. That’s where mobile broadband can help. With a portable device and a month-to-month data plan, you can get connected quickly, and take your connection with you when you move. Easy!

And if you do get a longer lease or buy your own home, and decide you want to get a fixed internet connection, you can cancel your data plan anytime. If you leave early, you’ll just need to pay out your device.

7. Need more data?

If you tend to burn through your monthly data allowance on your mobile plan, why not give yourself some extra data to use. With a Telstra 4GX Hotspot on a data plan, you can connect up to 20 Wi-Fi enabled devices, so you can keep streaming, gaming and doing whatever it is you like to do at uncapped speeds.

Already have a device? Check out our month-to-month SIM only data plans, with no excess data charges in Australia.

8. Say no to dodgy public Wi-Fi

Mobile broadband is more secure than public Wi-Fi. Why? Because our mobile broadband devices use encrypted Wi-Fi to create a secure connection for your Wi-Fi enabled devices. Public Wi-Fi, on the other hand, is open to everyone and is therefore less secure.
