Why scam awareness matters more than ever

Every year, Australians lose more than $2 billion to scammers. An unexpected text or email can be all it takes.

That’s why we’ve launched a new suite of free scam prevention resources with Justice Connect, an independent Australian charity that provides free legal support and practical education.

It includes:

These resources will help you recognise scams, protect your personal information and feel more confident navigating the digital world.

Spotting scams and acting quickly is crucial

In their scam education video, Justice Connect breaks down exactly how scammers operate, from impersonating delivery services and banks to pretending to be family members using a new number. Scammers deliberately use fear or urgency to cloud decision making. But taking a moment to pause and verify can stop a scam.

It also outlines the immediate steps to take if you think you’ve been scammed, including:

  • who to call
  • what to screenshot
  • how to report the incident.

Taking quick action gives you the best chance of recovering your money, while helping you recognise common scam tactics in the future.

Feel more confident doing everyday things online

Justice Connect has also released two short, practical guides. They offer straightforward tips to help people feel more secure when managing everyday digital tasks.

1. How to stay safe when banking online

Using online banking can feel daunting, especially if you’re not sure what’s legitimate. This guide supports anyone who wants to feel more confident using banking apps and websites - particularly if they’re new, unsure what to trust, or worried about scams.

It helps you to:

  • spot fake banking apps or websites
  • understand what banks will and won’t ask for
  • know what to do if something goes wrong.

2. How to check if a company is legitimate

Before paying a business or seller online, it can be hard to know who to trust. This guide is designed to help people pause, check and make more informed decisions before sending money.

  • understand why checking a company matters
  • do simple checks to spot warning signs
  • know your options if you’ve been misled.
