How to Be SUSS

We help protect our customers by blocking millions of malicious calls, emails and texts, every day.

But we all have to play a part - here are four simple steps you can take to be SUSS.

S for - Suspect all communications

Ask yourself if the call, message or email could be a scam before sharing personal or financial details. Think before you click on links and attachments.

U for - Update your software

Software updates help fix security gaps, so it’s harder for unwelcome visitors to get into your device. Keep all your devices up to date.

S for - Strengthen passwords

Create long, complex and unique passwords for every login. A password manager can help you keep track of all your passwords.

S for - Switch on multi-factor authentication

This adds an extra layer of protection to better safeguard your accounts if your password is guessed or stolen.

Extra tips for staying safe

Tip 1: Set up an SMS scam filter

It helps block malicious texts before they reach your phone. If you receive a suspicious email, call or text, report it to us.

Tip 2: Minimise what you install on your computer

Reducing the amount of installed software helps to reduce the likelihood of security vulnerabilities and may also keep your machine running faster.

Tip 3: Consider what you share online

While you’re unlikely to be specifically targeted, cyber criminals can use your public social media posts to appear more convincing when attempting a scam. Set your social media accounts to private and be mindful of the personal information you share online.

Tip 4: Backup your data regularly

Backing up your files to the cloud or an external hard drive regularly can protect you against data loss resulting from hardware failures, theft or malware.

Tip 5: Use secure Wi-Fi

Be careful about sending and receiving confidential information across public Wi-Fi networks – it’s easier for hackers to intercept these.

Tip 6: Verify messages from Telstra

You can check if any Telstra email or text message is legitimate using the My Telstra app notification centre. Here you can see most of the messages sent by Telstra, so if it’s there, it's really from us.
