Culture, Ethnicity and Race

Reflecting the diversity of our community

At Telstra, you’ll find a rich diversity of ethnic backgrounds, nationalities, beliefs, spoken languages and more. Our diversity enriches our lives and work. We amplify the unique value that comes from being different by making space for our people to be themselves.

Our work at Telstra reaches nearly every corner of Australia. One of Australia’s greatest strengths is that our community is made up of people from all around the world. This means the customers we serve have diverse needs, speak different languages and face unique challenges based on their circumstances.

To help us best contribute to our community, Telstra aims to reflect Australia’s cultural, ethnic and racial diversity.

Mosaic Employee Representative Group

The Mosaic Employee Representative Group is a community of people who advocate for Cultural, Ethnical and Racial Equity. The group consists of people with lived experience of inequity and allies. Their purpose is to:

  • Amplify the perspectives from Telstra’s Culturally, Ethnically and Racially diverse communities.

  • Enable Telstra to better leverage the global experiences and skills of our workforce.

  • Foster inclusion by raising awareness of days of cultural significance and stand up against racism.

Ways we’re supporting our people

Access Cultural Leave

Being able to recognise days that are significant to your culture is critical to feeling like you can be your whole self and belong. That’s why Telstra offers employees cultural leave that can be accessed for significant events such as Lunar New Year, Diwali, Sorry Business and more.

Redefining family in our bereavement leave

Family means different things across cultures. For some, family means those within a nuclear structure but for many the definition is much broader. That’s why Telstra’s definition of “family” within our bereavement leave extends beyond just the nuclear structure. This gives our team time to grieve their family, regardless how they define it, during periods of loss.

Actions we’re taking to level the playing field

Globally, many people still experience marginalisation and barriers to opportunities due to their ethnicity and or race. That’s why Telstra has committed to levelling the playing field by backing the aspirations of those who experience marginalisation.

Diversity Council Australia RISE Project

Telstra is a participant of Diversity Council Australia’s Realise. Inspire. Support. Energise (RISE) project. The project that aims to build pathways to leadership for women from culturally and racially marginalised (CARM) backgrounds. It is designed to identify and break down systemic barriers and to assist organisations in supporting women in middle management to reach senior leadership roles.

Digital Sisters program

Telstra is a proud partner of Digital Sisters, a program designed to build digital skills and confidence of refugee and migrant women. We want to make sure that everyone has the essential skills required to connect with the community and access the workforce.
