Check your modem's capability
Your modem matters. It plays a key role in delivering your internet experience. So, if you’re thinking about bringing your own modem to one of our Business Internet Only plans, it’s important to check that it’s compatible.
To help ensure you get the best performance possible and can easily move between plans, we recommend you make sure your modem:
- supports the plan speed you’re choosing
- is less than five years old
- supports Wi-Fi 6 or newer.
Learn more about how the right modem can help boost your business performance.
Set yourself up for speed
Your modem should support the speed you’re choosing. It needs to work with nbn or Opticomm and match the technology type at your address (like FTTP, FTTN, FTTC or Fixed Wireless).
If you're unsure what tech type you have at your address, read our article about FTTP, FTTN and FTTC to learn more.
Make the most of your FTTP or HFC connection
For our high-speed Business Internet Only plans (FTTP and HFC connections):
- You may need an ethernet cable with your BYO modem to help achieve the higher speeds.
- If you bring your own Telstra Smart Modem you’ll need a Cat5e or higher ethernet cable to help achieve the higher speeds (up to 1GB).
- If your modem can support the speed upgrade, you may need to reboot it to activate the faster speeds.
What to consider before you bring your own modem
Bringing your own modem to a Business Internet Only plan can save you money, but there are a few things to keep in mind:
- You’re responsible for making sure your modem is compatible and set up correctly.
- We can’t guarantee your modem will support the full speed of your plan.
- Technical support is limited for BYO modems. You’ll need to use the manufacturer’s instructions and website for help.
- We can help identify network faults, but support for your modem’s software and warranty comes from the manufacturer.
- Features like password management and access controls are managed through your modem’s settings.
If you think you’ll need more support to ensure your modem is properly set up to get the best out of your internet connection, explore our Business Internet Plus plans. These plans include a Telstra Smart Modem with features to enhance your service reliability and a greater level of support.
Explore a modem upgrade
If you have an existing modem that’s in good shape and suits your business needs that’s great. We can connect you without the need for you to buy a new modem. But if you’re not sure your modem is up to the task it’s worth considering an upgrade.
Telstra Smart Modem 4 is a smart choice
It's built to work with our network, pre-configured for easy setup. You’ll have access to ongoing support, software updates and remote troubleshooting, if needed.
You can choose to add a modem separately to your Business Internet Only plan. Or, if you’d like access to mobile back up you can explore Business Internet Plus plans. These plans come with a modem included and uncapped and unshaped mobile backup enabled.
Telstra also offers other modems for business customers, such as the eero 7 which uses TrueMesh technology. TrueMesh technology helps deliver a fast and reliable internet experience across a large number of devices (200+). It’s more suitable for businesses who need internet connectivity across multi-room offices, or in environments where separate back office and guest networks are important.
You can buy a new modem separately if you don’t want it bundled with your plan cost. Or you can choose a business internet plan that has a modem included and offers you extra features.
