Taylor: Embracing a 5G future

Taylor improving productivity and creating efficiencies

Construction and property delivery company Taylor design, develop and construct diverse projects across all industry sectors. Taylor’s engineers, designers, builders and technical teams depend every day on cloud-based collaboration tools for file sharing and video calling across their multiple office and project sites.

Taylor was previously using a mix of multiple connectivity technologies, including both 4G and fixed-line solutions. Not only did this technology mix require a high level of IT support and knowledge to operate, but also it increased the timeframe required to relocate worksites. Fit-out and refurbishment projects in the construction sector, for example, can see wait times of two to three months to get sufficient bandwidth or connectivity.

With their existing equipment reaching the end of its warranty period, Taylor was keen to explore the possibilities for a simpler and better solution.

Connecting people easily across multiple project sites, for better collaboration and quicker turn-around times.

Reducing the dependency on Taylor’s IT support team.

Gaining better control over infrastructure and overhead expenses.

Our Solution

Telstra recommended the enterprise-grade Cradlepoint 4G LTE wireless branch solution to improve the quality and management of connectivity at Taylor project sites. The solution is configured, deployed and managed in the cloud using one platform. By implementing this solution, Taylor can move a project office to a new location quickly and easily, without having to wait for fixed-line internet to be installed before commencing operations.

The solution offers an integrated upgrade pathway to 5G mobility, which is fundamental to Taylor’s digitisation strategy. As part of a Telstra 5G enterprise wireless trial, Taylor is now rolling out 5G to its project sites for improved speeds and lower-latency connections. “It’s the final piece of the puzzle that allows us to really start connecting every device and reporting and responding on a higher, integrated level of technology,” said Taylor IT Manager Christian Neyle.

How we achieved this

Introduced Cradlepoint’s NetCloud Service for Branch wireless solution at 40 locations. Deployed the Cradlepoint solution to 25 priority project sites and then rolled out to all remaining sites.

Installed 40 enterprise-grade Cradlepoint AER2200 (CAT 11) routers with cloud management services. One device replaced multiple devices at each location, resulting in reduced operating expenses.

These solutions enabled Taylor to configure, deploy and manage distributed connectivity through Telstra’s 4GX LTE-A /5G network (once available).

Outcomes

A Cradlepoint pre-sales engineer worked with Taylor on a 3-week proof of concept. The field tests conducted after successful installation showed that Telstra had reliable download and upload mobile broadband speeds at Taylor sites.

Telstra helped Taylor with its digital transformation journey and 5G is now being rolled out across the company’s work sites, thereby enabling adoption of new devices such as the Microsoft HoloLens mixed-reality headset – which allows workers and clients to walk around a 3D model of the finished building fit-out, while it’s still just a concrete slab or steel framework, so any required plan changes can be made early in the process.

This solution helped Taylor adapt to its ever-demanding business requirements and achieve the following:

Increased productivity for Taylor’s IT team by dramatically reducing IT effort to manage project site technology

Adopt new augmented reality and virtual reality tools and applications that transmit real-time data about a building’s plans, health or structure, for more efficient construction and design.

Improved mobile network experience for better collaboration with 4GX LTE and 5G

Greater cost control from visible asset connectivity at project sites through Cradlepoint’s NetCloud platform

“We can now take the models that we actually use for the building, before the building is built, and start to detect things like clashes or areas where the hydraulics need to go that may not have actually been feasibly designed properly yet. And you can place these headsets on, walk through the empty building you're about to fit out and go, hang on, the model isn't right here. We're not going to be able to actually put this service where it's supposed to go because there is a concrete pillar here that wasn't on the plans, that no one foresaw or knew about. And we can't move that pillar. So back to the drawing board. Let's update this model before we end up spending two weeks’ worth of effort and energy to get these trades out here, and subbies out here, to finish the work.”
