Career Start Edge is an internship program by Telstra that integrates university learning with workplace experience. It provides undergraduates with work-integrated learning on a permanent part time basis, with the potential to work throughout their degree and beyond graduation.

Career Start Edge bridges the gap between academia and the professional world to unlock a world of endless opportunities.

The program enables students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. By working alongside experienced professionals, students will gain practical insights and enhanced technical skills. Exposure to real-world environments will help undergraduates to make informed decisions about academic pathways and help tailor coursework to align with career goals.

Opening doors: who can embark on this adventure, and what does it involve?

To be eligible for Telstra’s Career Start Edge program, you must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program related to one of our career pathways, and have completed at least one year of undergraduate study, but not yet be in your final year of study.

As this is a part-time program, you’ll work two days a week, while balancing university commitments. The two days worked will be completely flexible to your individual university schedule, and may include working half-days or working extra time over breaks - and this can flex each semester!

Depending on the career pathway you’re eligible for, you'll get hands-on experience in a wide variety of areas. You might assist our Network or Software Engineering teams in specialist analysis, design and deployment in specific network tech domains, or building, testing, implementing and helping to maintain multiple system applications for our customers.

Through our Human Resources pathway you could be a part of designing employee experiences and fostering a positive work culture, while in Strategy, Finance, and Business you'll get involved in business analytics, financial modelling, strategic planning, and many other exciting challenges.

Your moment to shine: make an impression

We know your first exposure to a corporate environment can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. You want to make a positive impression that resonates with our recruitment team and makes you stand out.

Above all, we look for the right attitude, motivation, skill set and cultural fit. We are looking for undergraduates with a passion for technology and delivering great outcomes for customers. We want to see you have a growth mindset and willingness to learn.

Preparation is absolutely key. Ensure you have done your research about Telstra and get a sense of what we stand for. It’s important that we’re the right fit for you, and that you’re the right fit for us.

Let us know what motivates you, what your interests are, and give some detail about how you will balance your work and study commitments in a resilient manner.

Lastly - remember that authenticity matters. Be yourself, share your unique qualities, and let your passion shine through. By focusing on attitude, skills, cultural fit, and genuine motivation, you’ll make a great impression that resonates with us!

The next step: what comes after you hit apply?

The first step in applying for Career Start Edge is to complete a brief application form, and then upload your resume and your most recent academic transcript. After that you’ll complete the following steps:

  1. After submitting your application, our team will confirm you are eligible for the program.
  2. Eligible candidates will be sent a link to complete a HireVue recorded video interview and assessment task.
  3. Our team will assess all video applications. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a final day interview.
  4. If you are successful, we'll complete final background checks and you'll be sent your offer.

Here are a few tips and tricks to help you through this process

Make sure that you are prepared before you start, by having all the necessary equipment like a phone, PC or laptop, a working microphone and camera, and a solid internet connection. We recommend you do the interview, assessments, and games in a quiet space, free from distractions.

There are 3 stages involved in the final day interview:

  • The Undergraduate Q&A session allows you to hear from current Career Start – Edge participants; they’ll share insights about their work experiences, the unique learning experiences they’ve had, and you’ll be able to ask any questions you may have.
  • You’ll be presented with a Case Study question based on a current topical issue, and will need to prepare a 3-5 minute pitch which you’ll give in your interview.
  • The Final Day Interview, where you’ll be asked a series of questions - this is your chance to showcase your skills, personality, and mindset.

Try to be yourself through every step of the process! We know interviewing can be a little nerve-wracking, but take a breath, relax and show us why you’re the best fit for Telstra.
