Navigating the dynamic landscape of technology, I've carved out a place for myself within Telstra, an organization that not only embraces but also champions women in STEM fields. My journey to leadership in tech at Telstra is a testament to the company’s commitment to diversity, mentorship, and professional development. As a woman tech leader, I want to share my experiences, the support I have received, and offer advice to other women aspiring to climb the ranks in this thrilling, yet challenging industry.

The Path to Leadership

My career at Telstra began in 2016 as a software engineer, a role that opened the doors to a world of innovation and growth. I soon transitioned to Telstra Labs, where I delved into prototyping cutting-edge products alongside a diverse set of teams and external partners. This phase was crucial, as it allowed me to explore groundbreaking technologies and develop vital stakeholder engagement skills.

After two enriching years, I embraced the challenges of the B2B space with the Unified Communications team in Telstra Enterprise. Here, I contributed to the strategic product development of Adaptive Collaboration. The learning curve was steep, but it expanded my understanding of Telstra's IT systems and the complexities of product delivery.

In 2021, an opportunity arose that would shape my future: becoming a chapter lead for a team of software engineers and architects. This leadership role, supported by our Product and Technology chapter community, was instrumental in bolstering my confidence and honing my leadership abilities. A year into this role, I advanced to the position of Product Owner for the Adaptive Collaboration Portal.

Supportive Networks and Mentorship

Telstra's nurturing environment has been pivotal in my development as tech leader. The company's investment in diverse roles across product development has fed my passion and broadened both my technical expertise and my professional network. Initiatives like Telstra Women in Tech—encompassing programs like Alliance and Iconic Experience—and the Diversity Council Australia RISE Culturally and Racially Marginalised Women in Leadership program, have provided me with valuable mentorship and supportive networks.

The encouragement from Telstra's leaders and the Product and Technology chapter's dedication to fostering talent and diversity have been cornerstones of my growth. These initiatives have not only supported me but have also created a landscape where opportunities for advancement are abundant and accessible.

If you're a woman gunning for a leadership spot in tech, get ready for a wild ride. Keep learning, find mentors, and lean on your community to push ahead. Stay tough, stay sharp, and don't forget to chill out to keep your energy up. At Telstra, we've got your back with all the flexibility and support you need to grab those chances and shine. We champion the brave, value our people, and lift each other up. So, go on, take the reins and show the tech world what you've got. Let's lead the charge together.
