What type of mobile plan do you have?

We have two types of mobile plans - Upfront and post-paid. If you’re not sure which you have, you can check your plan type in My Telstra. Or choose your change option below.

How to change a post-paid plan

  • If you receive monthly bills, you're probably on a post-paid plan.
  • To change your plan, select a plan that’s right for you.

How to change an Upfront plan

  • If you pay via AutoPay instead of getting monthly bills, you're probably on an Upfront plan.

Frequently asked questions

You can check when your current plan or device contract ends by calling 13 2200 or by visiting us in store.

If you're on a month-to-month mobile plan, there’s no fee to change your plan, and if you purchased a device on repayments with that plan, you'll keep paying off your device.

However, if you choose a larger plan, you’ll be charged the higher cost per month for that plan until you cancel or change your plan again.

If you're on a mobile plan with a minimum term of more than one month, and are still paying off your device that you purchased with that plan, an early termination charge will appear on your next bill. To find out this amount, call 13 2200.

If you’re changing to a larger plan, you’ll start paying for your new plan at the time you change your plan.

If you’re changing to a smaller plan, you’ll start paying for your new plan at the start of your next invoicing cycle.

If you change your plan part way through a billing month, your next bill will include the following charges:

  • A part month charge for the days on your old plan, plus the following month’s charge in advance for the new plan, products and services
  • Pro-rata credits for the days remaining on your old plan
  • New data allowances and inclusions will be applied immediately and you’re billing will be adjusted to include the charges above.

Price and inclusions of Business Mobile or Business Data plans are subject to change.

If you’ve used up your included data on your month-to-month plan, you can access more data by changing to a larger plan. You can change your plan size once a month online or by visiting us in store.

Month-to-month plans: If you cancel your plan, you will receive a pro rata refund for the remainder of your month. If you have any device, accessory or service add-ons attached to your plan, you will have to pay any remaining amount owing on them on your next bill.

Prices and inclusions of month-to-month plans are subject to change. With no lock-in, you can change your plan once a month or cancel. If you cancel, just pay out your device, accessories or services in full.

Device Payment Contract: You must have an eligible Telstra Mobile Plan in order to have a Device Payment Contract. If you cancel your Device Payment Contract early, cancel your mobile plan during the device payment term or move to an ineligible mobile plan during the payment term, you’ll need to pay out your device, in full. Device discounts do not apply to cancelled Device Payment Contracts.

Network coverage:

4GX: The Telstra Mobile Network offers 4GX in all capital CBDs and selected suburban and regional areas and is progressively rolling out to more places. In other coverage areas around Australia, you’ll automatically switch to our fastest available 4G or 3G. Check coverage at telstra.com/coverage

Typical download speeds in 4GX areas are 5 -300Mbps with category 16 devices, 5-200Mbps with category 11 devices, 5-150Mbps with category 9 devices, 2-100Mbps with category 6 devices, and 2-75Mbps with category 4 devices. Outside 4GX areas, you will switch to our fastest available 4G or 3G speeds. Speeds vary for reasons like location, distance from base stations, terrain, user numbers, hardware/software configuration, download source and upload destination.

Telstra 5G: Telstra currently offers 5G in select areas and is progressively rolling it out to other areas. In non-5G coverage areas, you’ll automatically switch to our 4G or 3G. Check coverage at telstra.com/coverage

No excess data charges in Australia: Once you exceed your included data allowance, your speed will be slowed to 1.5Mbps, and slowed further in busy periods. This means it is not suitable for HD video or high speed applications and means that some webpages, videos, social media content and files may take longer to load, but you can still stream video in standard definition, listen to music, browse the web and access social media, even if the experience is slower sometimes.

Telstra Plus: You must be over 18 and have an eligible service on a Telstra business and/or consumer account to join. Excludes Telstra enterprise or corporate accounts.

Points are earned on payment of Telstra bill or pre-paid recharge (excl. refunds, credits & late payment fees). Points expire 3 years from earning. Marketing opt-in required (preferences can be changed).
