Telstra Satellite Messaging helps make text messaging possible beyond our mobile network. Select Satellite Apps gives access to practical apps, like Google Maps and WhatsApp, on a lower bandwidth.
Both Telstra Satellite Messaging and Select Satellite Apps are available in most outdoor areas in Australia, when there's a clear view of the sky. An eligible plan and compatible mobile are required.
Telstra Satellite is not designed to be an emergency service and should not be relied on in an emergency. You cannot call Triple Zero from a Telstra Satellite service, nor can you text Triple Zero directly.
Telstra Satellite Messaging is a service that allows eligible customers to send and receive text messages using satellites even when beyond our mobile network.
It’s included in our Upfront Mobile Plans and works with compatible devices running the latest software.
Select Satellite Apps allows eligible customers to use satellite-enabled apps for services like mapping and weather updates when beyond our mobile network. It means simple but important moments – like checking directions, staying informed or messaging friends and family – are now possible.
Supported apps currently include WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Signal, Apple Maps, Google Maps, AllTrails, AccuWeather, Google Weather, Apple Find My, and My Telstra.
Select Satellite Apps is included in eligible Upfront Mobile and Business Mobile Plans and works with compatible devices running the latest software.
Satellite-enabled apps provide select functionality with lighter capabilities, rather than the usual data-heavy experience powered by a mobile network.

Satellite-to-mobile technology requires a clear view of the sky. It won't work indoors or areas blocked by trees and buildings.
Once it's beyond the range of our mobile network, your compatible phone will automatically seek a satellite connection. Once connected, you'll see 'Telstra SpaceX' in your network status bar.
Send or receive a text using your phone’s regular texting app. Or access handy services from our list of supported apps. Remember, load and send times may take a little longer with satellite technology.
Satellite messaging and app-use is only the beginning. As this technology evolves, we anticipate additional capabilities becoming available to help you connect when off the grid. In time, the experience is expected to become smoother and with broader functionality.
