Stay connected when you're off the grid
Telstra is proud to introduce Australia's first satellite-to-mobile messaging service, designed to keep you connected even when you're off the grid. Whether you're exploring the outback, camping in remote areas or working in regional Australia, Telstra Satellite Messaging makes sure you can still send and receive texts.
What is Telstra Satellite Messaging?
Telstra Satellite Messaging is a new service that allows eligible customers to send and receive text messages using satellites when you're beyond the range of Telstra's mobile network coverage. It uses low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites and is available in most outdoor areas across mainland Australia and Tasmania with a clear view of the sky.
This service is included in Telstra Upfront Mobile Plans and works with compatible devices running the latest software.
How to get started
To use Telstra Satellite Messaging, you need:
- Compatible mobile device: Check if you have a compatible device. If not, more devices will be supported over time.
- Latest software update: Make sure your device is updated to the latest version.
- An eligible plan: If you're on a Upfront Mobile Plan, you're already set, no extra charges apply.
How to use Telstra Satellite Messaging
Follow these three steps when you're outside mobile coverage:
1. Go outside and look up
Satellite messaging requires a clear view of the sky. It won't work indoors or in areas blocked by trees, buildings or terrain.
2. Look for ‘Telstra SpaceX’
Once beyond the range of Telstra's mobile network, your compatible phone will automatically seek a satellite connection. Once connected, you'll see 'Telstra SpaceX' in your network status bar.
3. Send your message
Open your phone's regular messaging app to send and receive texts to Australian and international numbers. No extra apps needed.
Future capabilities
Right now, you can send and receive text messages but it's only just the beginning. Satellite messaging is expected to evolve in the coming years, so we can expand connectivity across rural and regional Australia.
Keep in mind:
- Message delivery times may vary depending on location, device and Starlink Direct-to-Cell satellite availability. Some messages may take minutes or longer to send/receive.
- This service isn’t for emergencies and can’t contact emergency numbers like Triple Zero.
- Always plan ahead when heading to remote areas.
