Connect in more places with Satellite Messaging
With a little help from our friends in space, text messaging beyond Telstra’s mobile coverage is now possible.
If you can see the sky, you can likely text
Australia's a big country and while we're constantly growing and improving our mobile coverage, we can't be everywhere. Telstra Satellite Messaging helps make text messaging possible beyond mobile coverage. It's available in most outdoor areas in Australia, when there's a clear view of the sky. An eligible plan and compatible mobile are required.
Satellite Messaging is not an emergency service
Satellite Messaging supports text messaging only, so it cannot be used to call 000 or 112 emergency services. You cannot text Triple Zero (000 or 112) directly either.
What is Telstra Satellite Messaging?
Telstra Satellite Messaging is a new service that allows eligible customers to send and receive text messages using satellites even when outside mobile coverage. It is available in most outdoor areas across mainland Australia and Tasmania with a clear view of the sky.
This service is included in Telstra Upfront Mobile Plans and works with compatible devices running the latest software.
How to get started
To use Telstra Satellite Messaging, you don't need to worry about any special set up, special apps or equipment. All you need is:
- A compatible device - and we're adding more all the time.
- The latest software update on your phone - keeping your phone updated is a smart way to help you stay safer online.
- An Upfront Mobile Plan - you're ready to go, with no extra charges.
How to use Telstra Satellite Messaging
Once you have what's needed to get started, follow these three steps when outside mobile coverage:
1. Go outside and look up
Satellite messaging requires a clear view of the sky. It won't work indoors or in areas blocked by trees, buildings or terrain.
2. Look for ‘Telstra SpaceX’
Once it's beyond the range of Telstra's mobile network, your compatible phone will automatically seek a satellite connection. Once connected, you'll see 'Telstra SpaceX' in your network status bar.
3. Send your message
Open your phone's regular messaging app to send and receive texts. Your messages may take a little longer to send but it should work like it normally does. You don't need any extra apps.
What’s coming next?
Satellite Messaging is only the beginning. As this technology evolves, we anticipate additional capabilities becoming available to help you connect when off the grid. In time, the experience is expected to become smoother and with broader functionality.
More features Today, satellite-to-mobile technology supports sending and receiving text messages. In the future, satellite-to-mobile connectivity is expected to support more ways to connect as the network and compatible devices continue to develop.
Improved reliability as the satellite network expands Message delivery times may vary depending on your location, device and satellite availability. As the Starlink Direct‑to‑Cell network grows, performance is expected to improve.
Designed to support regional and remote Australia Our goal is to help more people connect across more of the country - whether you’re working, exploring or simply checking in with loved ones.
