Telstra creates such an inspiring environment for grads where your curiosity is encouraged and you get to explore many areas of technology. I’ve been flourishing professionally since I first joined the program, and I’ve now secured a permanent role as a Telstra Network Engineer!

Growing my skill set

Telstra’s holistic approach to development not only enhanced my technical capabilities but also bolstered my capacity to thrive in a collaborative professional setting. The hands-on experience and networking opportunities you’re given in the graduate program are invaluable. It’s structured on a rotational basis, so I was able to explore various facets of the network engineering field and technology industry and find out what interests me most.

The program equipped me with all the skills I need for my current role. I developed technical proficiency in data analysis, using tools like Power BI, DEVIL, and Atoll. In addition, exposure to Agile tools such as JIRA and Confluence strengthened my project management skills, fostering an adaptability to dynamic work environments.

On the softer side, the program refined my communication skills, enabling clear and impactful interactions. In fact, leading meetings have now become a part of my skill set!

A couple of career turning points

A significant moment in my journey from a graduate to a Network Engineer was the development of a proof of concept using Splunk from the ground up.

Even though I didn't know much about Splunk at first, I managed to design and deliver the automation proof of concept within the given timeframe. I was pretty proud of myself. I felt like I truly belonged here. It also gave me a chance to work with many technical experts, which is another reason I see this experience as a turning point. I not only showed what I could do but made many more important professional connections within the organisation too.

My experience interviewing Mike Wood, a distinguished EME expert at Telstra, as part of the Career Series launch, was also notable. It provided a unique glimpse into the inner workings of the company and network engineering, from a senior leadership perspective, which gave me a deeper understanding of Telstra’s network and infrastructure.

On top of that, it served as a platform to network with yet more knowledgeable telecom experts from right across the industry.

Stay curious!

For anyone eyeing the Telstra graduate program, my advice is simple: just stay curious. While in the vast landscape of Telstra's operations, the network's complexity might seem overwhelming, don't shy away! Ask questions, connect with colleagues and fellow grads, and enjoy the rich learning curve. Every week here brings something new and exciting.

Remember that Telstra is here to support and guide you. There are a multitude of opportunities to dive into (even on teams you may not have heard of), and leaders are always ready to lend an ear and provide guidance. If you’re curious, adventurous and willing to take advantage of everything you’re exposed to as a graduate, it’s an ideal place to start your career in technology.
