I first embarked on my career with Telstra in 2005. Coming from the hospitality industry with no experience in retail, I felt like a fish out of water! But Telstra took a chance on me and it wasn’t long before I found my feet and learned how to engage with customers, provide excellent service, and sell products effectively.

2005 was certainly a different time. Bluetooth and infrared were all the rage. We didn’t have smartphones – instead, we had an older version of mobile internet called i-Mode, which was tough to sell without the help of data packs. Fast forward to today, and we can’t live without data!

Looking back on my 19-year journey since then, I’ve been trusted to take on more responsibilities, had the opportunity to work with amazing colleagues, learned from inspiring leaders, and witnessed the evolution of technology and telecommunications.

I've experienced challenges and triumphs along the way, adapted to changes in the industry, embraced new technologies, and continued to develop professionally.

I owe much of my career success to the fantastic support I’ve received along the way at Telstra Retail. Over the years, my managers and colleagues have always provided judgement-free guidance and encouragement. Whether it was dealing with difficult customers, handling objections, or navigating through new technologies, I have always had a strong support system around me.

Today, I try to pass that support on by coaching and training others whenever possible. Seeing them borrow bits from me here and there and take on my advice is an amazing compliment.

Dress codes, celebrity encounters and lasting friendships

It’s funny thinking back to all the memorable moments I’ve had over the past two decades. When I started, we wore corporate uniforms with white shirts and blue ties. I can still remember how green I was at the time, and how much I've grown since then.

That brings me to a particularly memorable experience – when I was promoted to assistant manager after years of hard work and dedication. It was a proud moment for my family and me. I've also had the opportunity to work on various projects and initiatives that have allowed me to travel and meet new people, develop new skills, and expand my knowledge of the industry.

Another perk has been crossing paths with celebrities who visited our stores, like Mark Beretta, Natalie Barr, Melissa Doyle, Sandra Sully, Willem Dafoe and Jack Black, to name a few.

Then, of course, there are the strong friendships I’ve made along the way. These relationships have been invaluable to me and have made my time at Telstra Retail truly special. The years have been filled with unforgettable experiences!

Be patient and good things will come

To anyone thinking about growing a career at Telstra Retail, there are so many great things to look forward to. The company has always placed a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion, creating a welcoming, supportive and inclusive environment for all employees.

Take advantage of the extensive training, development and networking opportunities the company offers. Build strong relationships with customers and colleagues, be willing to accept feedback, and adapt and grow in your role.

Even now, I’m learning all the time. I’m living proof that with the right attitude and commitment, you can build a fulfilling career and go anywhere you want to at Telstra.
