1. Data Mobility

Situation

A large energy company needed a more efficient and cost-effective way to manage its digital infrastructure, which supported its billing and other core business systems. It also wanted a more agile, cloud-based approach to developing new customer campaigns and applications, plus the ability to increase the size of their test and development environment.

Complication

The company considered emerging Public Cloud Services from AWS and Azure to provide it with elastic and on-demand infrastructure and connectivity to these providers through Telstra’s simplified network via Cloud Gateway. With the agility from spinning up virtual machines (VM’s) in minutes, the company can reach their data more quickly and deal with this major challenge for developers, who require ready access to the production datasets to perform testing and validation on new code module. As datasets become more dispersed in other branches and locations of the company, migrating data from on-premises to each development environment not only would be a time consuming, sometimes taking days, but also be a manual process. It would also lead to data sprawl in Public Cloud and a significant increase to their costs.

Resolution

This ‘Data Gravity’ issue was solved with Virtual Storage. Storing the customer’s data adjacent to the Cloud and in a central network meant they could quickly connect to all of their data. The built-in snapshot and replication capabilities let them create copies in minutes to attach to development environments, and keep all copies secure and close to the environments. As these snapshots only use incremental space it also keeps costs under control.

2. Data Security – when hardware fails

Situation

Many organisations are heavily dependent on digital records and are demanding high availability storage solutions to replace their traditional infrastructure. This involves best practices such as disaster recovery, change control, testing environments and N+1,.

Complication

Although best practices can be adopted at the design stage,in reality what tends to be missing is the ability to recover in near real time along with the ability to test and run disaster recovery tests. Customers were unable to recover data in near real-time, or run disaster recovery tests. Just ensuring the designs were implemented required weeks of planning, and caused a drain on both resources and finances. This meant customers could either have an ineffective business continuity plan or at times minimal coverage.

Resolution

Customers can create a hybrid solution to meet their data security needs using Virtual Storage on the Telstra network. If an outage occurs, Storage Centralisation lets them recover data up to the point of outage in minutes through near real time synchronisation of data into the cloud. They can generate Disaster Recovery copies of data and keep multiple recovery points in the one cost-effective cloud location, without needing to manage a second site.

3. Branch Data Secured

Situation

A major law firm with branch offices across the country and overseas needed to manage an explosion of content, and at same time ensure all its users were productive. Much of the content is being produced at the network edge which in turn which raises the investment required for branch IT infrastructure as well as on-going management. What’s more, branch offices lacked the necessary security protection and defences.

Complication

Branch offices were the main generator of company revenue, and keeping them operating was critical. But the cost of maintaining remote infrastructure was significant, and remote branches often suffered outages that dragged on for weeks before services were restored. Data sovereignty was also an issue, with data from other countries not governed by the same laws as Australian generated content, putting the company under significant liability.

Resolution

Storage Centralisation made the customer’s branch data much more secure, with remote data continually backed up to Virtual Storage and access and replication strictly controlled. If an outage occurs, recovery can be as quick as 10 minutes and branches can be back up and running within 15 minutes. It also enables “stateless” secure branch services, encrypting data in their overseas sites* and making it unusable if it falls into the wrong hands.

*Data in the overseas sites can be encrypted at rest and in flight (when transferred over the network) with AES 256bit encryption.
