Telstra, in collaboration with the Asia/Pacific division of global market intelligence firm IDC, have published a report which examines the importance Australian business leaders are placing on digital infrastructure investments to drive competitive differentiation, and the transformative impact these investments are having on company growth, resilience and long-term success.

A future of digital value creation

A ‘Digital Business’, as defined by IDC, is an organisation whose digitally dependent products, services, and experiences are their major sources of differentiation and growth.

IDC predicts that Australian organisations are quickly moving towards a ‘Digital Business Era’ whereby an increasing proportion of their revenue will be derived from strategic digital programmes and new digital business models. This era is predicted to impact every industry, as digital programmes can help transform existing operation models – and create new ones – to accelerate growth, boost resiliency, and increase customer satisfaction.

As digital infrastructure matures, hurdles appear along the path to innovation

Along with this pivot to a more digital-first approach, organisations are encountering hurdles on this journey, from getting started to innovating and futureproofing.

IDC uncovered that businesses across Australia understand the importance and urgent need to digitalise their infrastructure, however are behind their worldwide peers when it comes to leading improvements in business outcomes from digital infrastructure - and are often weighed down by operational and staffing challenges, cybersecurity concerns, and technical debt.

An integrated services approach to digital infrastructure

In the report, IDC provides guidance on best practices for leveraging an “integrated services approach” to managing digital infrastructure.  The report reveals Australian organisations are looking to shift more infrastructure operational responsibilities to third-party service providers who have a range of digital capabilities across cloud, network and security and who can use observation and intelligence to automate across the entire stack.
