MCA Art Series Case – Betty Pumani

Ms. N. Marawili has recently passed away: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are advised that this article contains the name and artwork of a deceased person.

Telstra first partnered with the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA Australia) in the year 2000, when they enabled the Museum to introduce free admission. Over the years, Telstra has helped the MCA develop their audience engagement technology, supported major exhibitions, public programs and the MCA’s online museum guide mca.art. We share the ambition to increase and deepen engagement with contemporary art for all.

In the spirit of sharing art in new ways, we have worked closely with the MCA to create a series of mobile phone cases featuring the work of two First Nations artists from the MCA Collection, Betty Pumani's 'Antara', 2020 and Ms. N. Marawili’s 'Baratjala', 2019. This collaboration aims to share the rich culture, history and perspectives of First Nations artists.

Featured Artwork: Betty Kuntiwa Pumani, Antara (detail), 2020, synthetic polymer paint on linen.

Betty Pumani was born on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in the northwest of South Australia. She grew up on her family’s homeland around Antara and Victory Well, nestled among the vast granite hills of the Everard Ranges. Pumani’s vibrant landscape paintings express the beauty and resilience of her Country and family in her own visual language.

Pumani’s paintings represent Antara – her mother’s Country – and reveal a shimmering landscape of red earth, bright blue waterholes and stippled white tobacco flowers. At the core of Pumani’s painting practice is the deep connection of her family to the land, going back generations.
