Introduction

In today’s digital landscape, connectivity underpins workforce productivity, operational efficiency, and service delivery. It’s so much more than just a convenience – for many, it's become a necessity.

Telstra’s mobile network reaches many places across Australia, however for those moments when team members are travelling beyond the reach of our land-based mobile network, Telstra Satellite Messaging offers an extra connectivity option to send or receive a text message with colleagues, customers, friends or family.

Whether team members are conducting fieldwork, visiting customers or undertaking infrastructure maintenance, this additional layer of connectivity provided by the Starlink satellite network means your team can stay in touch, almost anywhere their business takes them.

What is Telstra Satellite Messaging?

Telstra Satellite Messaging is a technology that allows customers with a compatible device and the latest software update to send or receive text messages beyond the range of our mobile network.

You’ll need to have an eligible Telstra Adaptive Mobility plan with the Satellite Messaging add-on, and to be outside with clear line of sight to the sky.

Our satellite network is available in most of mainland Australia, Tasmania and immediate offshore areas, excluding the Australian Radio Quiet Zone in Western Australia and remote offshore territories and islands of Australia.

When our mobile network is unavailable, your compatible device will automatically seek to connect to the satellite network. Once connected to a satellite with Starlink Direct to Cell capabilities, you will be able to send and receive text messages via Telstra Satellite Messaging. Note that because of the different technology, some messages may take a few minutes or longer to send and receive, depending on location, device and satellite position.

Benefits for Enterprise, Government & Business Customers

Enterprise, Government and Business customers can now access a range of benefits that were not previously possible, including:

  • Simple Set Up: All you need is a compatible handset with the latest software – no additional equipment required. This simplicity reduces complexity and accelerates deployment for teams operating in remote areas.
  • Service Delivery: Helps meet stakeholder expectations, enhance customer experience and improve staff satisfaction by enabling communication continuity even when traditional mobile coverage is unavailable.
  • Operational Performance: Supports productivity and efficiency targets by improving response times for opportunity management and issue resolution, ensuring teams can act quickly and maintain momentum.

Industry Use Cases

Transport, Supply Chain, Mining, Construction and Energy: Staying Connected with Your People

Many Australian businesses frequently work in the most isolated parts of the country – transporting, building, or inspecting and maintaining physical assets.

Telstra Satellite Messaging helps these teams stay in touch via SMS to:

  • Report job progress and request additional resources.
  • Receive updates or alerts from management.
  • Coordinate logistics for deliveries or crew rotations without having to rely on traditional mobile networks.

This connectivity helps improve operational efficiency by minimising delays in getting information back to base when working outside our mobile coverage area.

Professional Services Firms and Government: Staying Connected on the Land

Arranging inspections or providing advice is crucial for mobile workforces who are often on the go and visiting stakeholders in areas where connectivity can be challenging.

With Telstra Satellite Messaging, these employees can:

  • Send and receive updates while on-site to improve turnaround times.
  • Coordinate meetings or connect with clients without needing to return to areas with mobile coverage.

This added layer of connectivity helps Professional Services Firms build trust, reduce friction with clients and improve access to service providers in rural and remote communities.

Conclusion

Telstra Satellite Messaging is re-shaping the boundaries of business connectivity in Australia and empowering industries to become more agile, resilient, and responsive.

As more Enterprise, Government and Business customers look to innovate and bridge the digital divide, Telstra Satellite Messaging can help unlock new possibilities across most of the nation’s landscapes where traditional mobile connectivity is not available.
