Telstra expands Satellite Messaging to Enterprise customers, helping organisations stay connected beyond the mobile network
Telstra today announced that Satellite Messaging is available for Telstra Enterprise customers to add to their eligible Adaptive Mobility plans.
Telstra Satellite Messaging enables eligible customers using a compatible phone with the latest software to send and receive SMS messages via satellite when outdoors beyond the reaches of Telstra's mobile network coverage, with a clear line of sight to the sky. It's available in most areas on mainland Australia and Tasmania.
Telstra Enterprise Group Executive, Oliver Camplin-Warner said this capability adds an extra layer of connectivity for Enterprise customers, supporting business resilience and operational efficiency, and keeping teams in touch when their work takes them further afield.
"We know business doesn’t stop when employees need to travel beyond mobile coverage, which Is why there Is a big appetite for this new capability.
"Since the Initial launch for consumers and small business, I’ve lost count of the number of customers asking about this new capability and how It might benefit their organisations. Think of the healthcare team working to deliver important services in East Arnhem Land, the construction crew building a new solar farm hundreds of kilometres from the nearest town, or the cattle station beyond Bedourie in outback Queensland.
"When you have team members travelling long distances or workers spread across thousands of hectares, staying connected means teams can get the job done more simply, easily, and with greater peace of mind.
"We're driven by seeing our customers be successful and Telstra Satellite Messaging is just another way we're committed to delivering leading connectivity that helps them stay productive, connected and ready to seize opportunities – wherever their work takes them," said Mr Camplin-Warner.
Energy Queensland is exploring satellite messaging technology to expand communication options for crews working in regional and remote areas.
Digital Workplace Platform Manager for Energy Queensland, Justin McIntosh, said, "our field teams play a critical role in maintaining electricity supply across Queensland, often operating in locations with limited mobile coverage. Satellite messaging provides an additional layer of connectivity, helping ensure our people can stay in touch and continue delivering essential services to the community safely."
The introduction of Telstra Satellite Messaging for Enterprise customers follows the successful launch for consumer and small business customers in June. Today, we’re seeing around 120,000 connections to our satellite to mobile service on average per day from across Australia – that’s 120,000 opportunities to connect outside of our mobile coverage that weren’t possible before we launched this service.
What to expect with Telstra Satellite Messaging
Our satellite messaging product is an intermittent service with the time it takes to send and receive messages dependent on your location, your device, and the availability of Starlink Direct to Cell satellites. This means customers are likely to find that some messages are sent or received almost instantly, while others may take many minutes or longer.
Telstra Satellite Messaging is not designed to be an emergency service, especially as you cannot text Triple Zero directly. So, if you’re planning on visiting remote regions, it is always recommended to plan ahead and take extra precautions in the case of an emergency.
