Telstra introduces an easy way to purchase Android apps and games

From today Telstra customers with an Android smartphone can purchase the latest apps, games, movies, magazines and books by charging them to their mobile bill.

The new service marks the first time Australians can pay for Google Play app store purchases using a mobile phone account – providing a convenient alternative to using a credit card.

Telstra’s Director of Consumer Applications and Services, Freddie Jansen Van Nieuwenhuizen, said the new service would make it easier for Australians to acquire the latest games and content for their mobile devices.

“Aussies love their mobile apps. Telstra research shows that on average we download 36 apps each year and one in five of those are paid for,” Mr Jansen Van Nieuwenhuizen said.

“With more than 700,000 games, apps, books, movies and magazines now available on Google Play – including a wide selection of paid titles – many of our customers have told us they would like a simpler way to buy.

“So we’ve teamed up with Google to allow our customers to place Google Play purchases of up to $20 per transaction on their Telstra mobile bill. We’re also making it easier for our Pre-Paid customers to buy apps by letting them use their main account balance to make Google Play purchases provided they have credit available.”

To celebrate the launch, Telstra and Google are offering customers a range of popular Android applications half price. The promotion will run until 18 December and includes popular titles spanning games, fitness and tools.

How customers can purchase an app using their Telstra bill

Once a customer has registered to bill their Telstra account, purchasing Android content is easy.

Customers simply:
1. Choose the app, book, magazine, movie or game they’d like to purchase.
2. Click ‘Accept and Buy’.
3. Select ‘Bill my Telstra account’
4. Click ‘Accept and Buy’.

For Post-Paid customers a monthly limit of $100 applies for app and content purchases charged to their Telstra bill. This limit can be adjusted by calling Telstra on 125 111.
