Samsung GALAXY S5 and smart wearables to launch with Telstra 11 April

Media Release, 27 March 2014

Australians will be able to team the most sophisticated Samsung smartphone yet with the nation’s largest and most reliable mobile network from Friday, 11 April when new Samsung GALAXY S5 launches through Telstra stores and online.

Customers who can’t wait until 11 April to secure their GALAXY S5, can pre-order from 9am 27 March.

In addition to offering the GALAXY S5, Telstra will cater for Australia’s growing appetite for wearable technology by bringing the Gear Fit to Telstra stores across the nation and stocking the new Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smart watches at select outlets and online.

John Chambers, Executive Director, Telstra Mobile, said the launch of the new Samsung GALAXY S5, and its smart accessories marks a new era of wearable technology in Australia.

“Thousands of our customers have registered to find out more about the new GALAXY and its wearable accessories and it’s shaping up to be one of our most anticipated smartphone launches to date.

“The phone builds on all the elements people love about the GALAXY S series. And, for the first time it comes with an IP67 rating, meaning it is both water and dust resistant , great news for those people who expose their mobile to the elements.

“Other highlights include a heat rate monitor , built-in fingerprint scanner that lets you unlock your phone with the swipe of a finger and a feature that extends the phone’s battery life by shutting down non-essential features,” Mr Chambers said.

According to Mr Chambers the Samsung GALAXY S5 is built for the future.

“The GALAXY S5 is one of the first smartphones compatible with the 700MHz spectrum we invested in last year which will form the foundation for next generation 4G services. Customers with the GALAXY S5 will be among the first to benefit from the better in-building coverage and more reliable internet speeds when Telstra switches on 700MHz coverage in early 2015.

“Until then customers can enjoy the Samsung GALAXY S5 with our existing extensive 4G network, which offers four times the 4G coverage area of other Australian mobile networks,” said Mr Chambers.

Telstra also confirmed it will offer the Samsung Gear Fit, Samsung Gear 2 and Samsung Gear 2 Neo to customers.

“Fitness apps and technology have long proven popular with many of our customers who are passionate about their health. Samsung’s new accessories will allow our customers to track their daily activity while staying connected with their emails, calls and messages,” Mr Chambers said.

The Gear Fit is water and dust resistant, features a built-in heart rate monitor and pedometer to help track fitness levels during workouts and throughout the day. A curved AMOLED display keeps customers connected with emails, texts, and incoming calls when paired with the GALAXY S5 over Bluetooth.

The Gear 2 is a premium smart watch with a metallic body featuring a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED screen that displays incoming calls, texts, emails notifications. It has a built-in camera that can take HD pictures and short videos. The Samsung Gear 2 Neo is a lighter, sports-oriented smart watch that can be paired with a Bluetooth headset (sold separately) to stream music while owners are on the go or working out. It’s available in black, orange and grey from select stores. Both devices come with a heart rate monitor and pedometer and are water and dust resistant.

Customers who love to have the latest technology every year can take up the Samsung GALAXY S5 on a new eligible 24-month handset payment and mobile plan, and add Telstra New Phone Feeling for a bit more each month. Then, after 12 months, take up a new phone on an eligible new 24-month handset payment and mobile plan when they return their old phone in good working condition.
