Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) - battery backup for Telstra Smart Modem

An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is a battery backup for a Telstra Smart Modem. It can provide power for a Telstra Smart Modem for up to 4 hours in the event of a mains electricity outage. This means your Smart Modem will remain online for up to 4 hours in the event of an electricity outage at your address allowing you to use your home phone line (if it's connected via the nbn™ network).


The battery backup includes an internal battery which charges while plugged into AC mains power and supplies power directly to the modem if the mains electricity switches off for any reason.

No, the battery backup for Telstra Smart Modem is only compatible with the Telstra Smart Modem (Gen 1 & 2).

What handsets will work with the battery backup for Telstra Smart Modem?

The battery backup for Telstra Smart Modem will work with Telstra’s T-Voice T502 and T503, as well as the T1000S.

Handsets that plug directly into mains power, as well those that use a Telstra Voice Extender or any other form of DECT extender that requires mains power will not work with the battery backup. Check with the handset manufacturer if unsure.

How can I test whether my handset will work in a power outage?

If your handset is connected to mains power, switch off the power point, and then try to make a call. If your device doesn’t require mains power to function, the handset will continue to make and receive calls. If not, you will be unable to make any outgoing calls.

 

What is “AC mains power”?

Mains power is how electricity is supplied through power points in your home. Anything requiring connection to a power point to work will not work in a power outage or where the power point is switched off.

How long will the battery backup for Telstra Smart Modem last in a power outage?

The battery backup will last for up to 4 hours in the event of a mains electricity outage, depending on the in home conditions and usage. To get the best results, turn off the Wi-Fi on your Telstra Smart Modem when using the battery backup.

 

How do I switch off Wi-Fi on my Telstra Smart Modem?

On your modem (both Gen 1 and 2), you can press the Wi-Fi button (located at the front of the modem). We don’t recommend this if you’re using the modem to connect to the internet using Wi-Fi.

 

Do I need to turn on the battery backup for Telstra Smart Modem in the event of an electricity outage?

The battery backup for Telstra Smart Modem has an Auto Switch-Over feature. This means if the mains electricity fails, the battery backup for Telstra Smart Modem will automatically kick in.

 

How often do I need to replace the battery backup for Telstra Smart Modem?

The battery backup for Telstra Smart Modem must be replaced within 2 years from the date of manufacture. This can be found on the back of the battery backup for Telstra Smart Modem, on a yellow sticker.

Installing battery backup for Telstra Smart Modem

The battery backup for Telstra Smart Modem replaces the existing Power Adapter (cord) on your Telstra Smart Modem. The old cord is unplugged from the modem and the Power Point, and the new battery backup for Telstra Smart Modem plugged in its place.

 

How do I test battery backup is working?

Once the battery backup is connected between Telstra Smart Modem and mains power, allow at least 3 hours for the internal battery to charge and then switch off the power at the power point. The battery backup for Telstra Smart Modem should start supplying power to the Telstra Smart Modem.

How do I operate the ON/OFF button on the battery backup?

The ON/OFF button can ONLY be used to conserve backup power during a power outage, or if the battery backup is disconnected from AC Mains power. When using the button, your Smart Modem will require adequate time to boot up so we recommend only using this feature where the power outage is expected to be longer than 4 hours.

To turn off the battery backup press the ON/OFF button twice. To switch it back on press the ON/OFF button once. These instructions can also be found on the device.
