How do Wi-Fi Extenders work?

Wi-Fi Network Extenders pick up your modem’s Wi-Fi signal and boost it out further, to fill in ‘dead spots’ and let you connect to the internet in more places around your home.

Where to place your Wi-Fi Extender:

  • The ideal spot to place your extender is half-way between your Wi-Fi modem and the device you want to connect to the Wi-Fi network
  • If the extender is not receiving a good quality signal, move it closer to the modem until it is within range of your modem’s Wi-Fi signal.

To set up your Wi-Fi Network Extender

You can connect your extender to your Wi-Fi network automatically, or manually.

Automatically connect via WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup):

  1. Plug your Wi-Fi Extender into the power point you’ve chosen, and turn the power on. The power light will turn green.
  2. Press the WPS button on your extender, then within 2 minutes, press the WPS button on your modem; your extender will automatically configure itself to your modem, and set up a secure connection.
  3. Now you can connect your devices to the Wi-Fi signal coming from the extender. It will have a different name to your existing Wi-Fi (and have an ‘EXT on the end), but it will use the same password as your existing Wi-Fi.
  4. For more help connecting to your Wi-Fi, see Connecting to a Wireless Network

  5. Once configured, you can move your extender to other power sockets if you want. It will keep working as long as it’s still in range of your modem.

Manually connect via a Web Browser

  1. Plug your Wi-Fi Extender into the power point you’ve chosen, and turn the power on. The power light will turn green.
  2. Make sure the Wi-Fi is turned on, on your computer, tablet or mobile. From the list of available networks, select ‘NETGEAR_EXT’. The ‘Client link’ light on your extender will turn green.
  3. Open a Web browser like Chrome, Safari or Firefox, and your device will redirect to the Wi-Fi Network Extender Set Up page.
  4. NOTE: If this does not happen, type www.mywifiext.net into the URL bar and press ‘Enter’.

  5. Select the Wi-Fi Range Extender (Wireless) Option and press 'Continue’
  6. You’ll now see a list of available Wi-Fi Networks. Select the one you want to extend, and click ‘Continue’
  7. You’ll be asked to enter a Wi-Fi Password: enter the same password as your existing Wi-Fi network, and press ‘Continue’.
  8. You will be asked to enter a Wi-Fi Name: enter the same name as your existing Wi-Fi network, but with the suffix ‘_EXT’. Press ‘Continue’.
  9. Connect your devices to the Wi-Fi signal coming from the extender. For more help connecting to your Wi-Fi, see Connecting to a Wireless Network.
  10. Once configured, you can move your extender to other power sockets if you want. It will keep working as long as it’s still in range of your modem.
