These are the main factors outside of your home that can affect your broadband speed:
Network congestion and your service provider’s network capacity
Network congestion occurs when many customers download data at the same time and the network doesn’t have capacity to handle it.
- The more network capacity your provider has, the less your speed will be affected during peak periods.
- Although Telstra’s network has the largest capacity, we still closely monitor the speeds our customers are getting on all technology types and we constantly work towards improving them.
- It usually occurs during peak periods, for example, between 7pm-11pm but it can also be during special broadcasts like the Olympics, iPhone/Android™ software updates, or school holidays.
- If you’re getting consistently slow speeds, it may be something other than network congestion.
Copper wiring – how long it is, how good it is
If part of your broadband connection is delivered using copper wiring, your speed can be affected by:
- How far the signal has to travel along the copper wiring
- The condition of the existing copper infrastructure.
Good to know:
- Damaged, corroded, or badly connected copper wiring can dramatically reduce your broadband speed and cause dropouts. You may need a technician to repair it.
- If you’ve got ADSL or Cable broadband, heavy rain and severe weather can slow your broadband connection.
