Download refers to when information (or ‘data’) is received by your device from somewhere else, such as when data is transferred from the internet to your device. For example, when you open a website or stream a video from YouTube or Netflix, the data is downloaded in segments to your device, before being played.

Upload refers to when you send data from your device to somewhere else. For example, posting pictures or videos on social media, copying them to cloud storage and sending files or emails involves transferring the data from your device to the internet.
