How Telstra Smart Home works

The Telstra Smart Home App makes it easy for you to talk to your Smart Home devices, with customised automations. Create instructions in the app to tell your Smart Home devices what to do and when to do it. You only need to set up automations once and the Telstra Smart Home Hub will remember them for you. 

How Smart Home works

The Telstra Smart Home App lets you talk to your Smart Home devices – like cameras, lights and sensors. You can set them up to automatically know what to do and when to do it by creating customised instructions, called automations.

For example, you can tell the living room light to automatically turn on when your family gets home at night. You only need to set up an automation once, and you’re done. Then you can watch your home come to life.

Using the App and Web Portal

Simple and easy to use, the Telstra Smart Home App will guide you every step of the way – from setting up your hub and adding your devices, to creating your first automation and managing your Smart Home on a daily basis.

Download the app from the App Store or Google Play. You don’t need to sign up, have a Telstra Smart Home subscription or any devices to take a tour.

Telstra Smart Home App - Telstra ID

Telstra ID

Your Telstra ID is a single username and password for your Telstra products and services. In addition to Smart Home, you’ll get access to a range of Telstra services, including My Account and the Telstra 24x7 App. You’ll also receive Telstra Thanks rewards to enjoy movies, music, sport and more.

Your Telstra ID is the only login you’ll need to access the Telstra Smart Home App and Web Portal from anywhere.

Telstra Smart Home Hub

Telstra Smart Home Hub

The Telstra Smart Home Hub connects all of your Smart Home devices. Let them talk to one another through the automations you create, and talk to you via the app or web portal. The hub is an essential component in any Smart Home, so we’ve included it in the Watch and Monitor, and Automation and Energy Starter Kits.

The hub plugs into a power outlet in your home and connects to your Wi-Fi. You don’t need to be a Telstra broadband customer as our hub works with any broadband provider that has the Universal Plug and Play (UPNP) enabled, which is a feature of most Wi-Fi modems made after 2009. Automations bring your Smart Home to life

The key to having a Smart Home is creating automations. An automation is an instruction that tells a Smart Home device what to do and when to do it. The Smart Home hub can talk to the devices, and the devices can talk to each other, but you’re the one who tells them what to do. It’s easy to set up automations in the Telstra Smart Home App or Web Portal. 

Tell your Smart Home to switch off the lights at 9am when everyone leaves for school or work, and again at 10pm when everyone goes to bed. Or, ask the outdoor camera to keep an eye on the backyard and take a video or picture if you’re away from the house and it sees something.

Stay up to date when you're on the go

Automations can also send you alerts that tell you what’s going on in your home when you’re not around. For example, if the door sensor at the rear of the house picks up that the back door is open, it can send you an SMS. Need a picture of your backyard? Smart Home can email it to you.

It’s easy to set up automations. The Telstra Smart Home App provides suggestions and can guide you step-by-step through creating your first automation. You only need to set up automations once and the Telstra Smart Home Hub will remember them for you.

Telstra Smart Home is easy to set up. Initial set up with the App takes about 15-20 minutes then you can start installing your devices around your home. The starter kits contains everything you need to install the devices in and around your home. The Telstra Smart Home App contains instructions to guide you every step of the way. We’re here to help with 24x7 technical phone support, simple online support articles and how-to videos to guide you through setup. You can also join our Smart Home Crowd Support community, where you can share tips and tricks with other Telstra Smart Home owners.

Want some helping hands?

Some of our specialised devices – such as the thermostat and door lock – are a little trickier. For these devices, we recommend installation by a licensed professional. You’re free to choose your own, or let us recommend one for you. Suggestions are included in the device’s packaging.
