You also get to upgrade at any time after the first year, so long as you sign up to a new 24 month handset and service plan. And provided your phone is in good working order , you’ll pay only $99 to upgrade.
Peace of mind
We know that accidents happen. So if you’re on a lease plan and damage your phone, you can still upgrade after 12 months. If your phone has a cracked screen, you can upgrade for $229. If your phone can’t be fixed, you can upgrade for $499.

For extra assurance, add Assure for just $10 per month. Assure gives you the ability to upgrade your damaged phone at any time and in any condition for a flat fee of $190 when you sign up to a new 24 month handset and service plan.

Unless they’re beyond repair, all devices returned to us for an upgrade are refurbished and reused. So when you lease a phone from us, you’ll be doing your bit for the environment by reducing your e-waste.

The amount you pay to lease the handset depends on the plan you take up and the handset you choose. Some of the options don't require you to pay an additional monthly lease payment. Here's an example of one of them.
Our lease plans
With our lease plans, you’re leasing your eligible phone on a 24 month Device Lease Contract with a service plan – you don’t own the device.
If you upgrade, you must return your old phone. If you signed up to a lease plan prior to 22nd August 2017, you must return your old phone within 30 days of entering your new eligible service plan. If you signed up to a lease plan from the 22nd August 2017 onwards, you’ll need to return your old phone within 14 days of entering your new eligible service plan. If you don’t return it, we’ll charge you a non-return fee, which is up to the device’s fair market value (to be advised at the time) plus 20%.
At the end of your lease, you must return the phone undamaged. If it’s damaged, you’ll pay the damage fee. If you don’t return it, (subject to our approval) you’ll continue to pay your monthly lease payments for up to 6 months, then a non-return fee of the device’s fair market value (to be advised at the time).
You can offer to purchase your phone device at the end of lease. Be sure to remove the SIM and any personal or confidential data from the device before returning it.
If you cancel your lease early or we terminate it for your breach before month 12, you must pay a fee based on the RRP of your device (at the time of leasing) which decreases by 3% each month (or part thereof) up until the date at which you terminate in addition to any ETC’s payable in respect of your Eligible Plan and any accessories under an Accessories Repayment Option and you will then own the device. If you cancel early or we terminate it for your breach after month 12, you can return the handset and pay $99 if it's undamaged or up to $499 if it is damaged or you can keep it and pay fair market value (to be advised at the time) and then own the device. All of these fees and payments are on top of any early termination charges for your service plan and accessories.
Telstra Swap Assure: Mobile Swap Assure can be taken up at the time you take up your handset and plan for $10 per month and lets you upgrade your device regardless of damage to a new device at any time provided you pay an upgrade fee of $190, return the damaged device to us and enter into a new 24 month eligible device and mobile service plan.
On and from 22 August 2017, if you take up Mobile Swap Assure, you will only be able to upgrade your device two times within each 12 month anniversary of your Go Mobile Swap plan.
At the end of your lease contract you must return your device to us and with Mobile Swap Assure, if your device is damaged pay an additional fee of $190, or you may buy your device for fair market value (to be advised at that time). You may cancel Mobile Swap Assure or Business Lease Assure at any time in which case the relevant standard fees and charges for your lease contract will apply.

If you cancel early, you must repay the remaining handset repayments in addition to any early termination charges for your service.

Extra Data: If you go over your Monthly Data Allowance, we’ll automatically add Extra Data to your allowance for that month in 1GB blocks at a cost of $10 per GB. Extra Data applies to eligible plans only and is for use in Australia. Extra Data will be shared between any eligible services on your account that support data sharing and will expire at the end of your billing month.
Delivery: You must be at your nominated address with ID to receive delivery of your phone.
10GB Telstra Air Data: To access your 10GB Telstra Air Data, you need to register for Telstra Air using an existing Telstra ID or by setting up a new Telstra ID. It is recommended that you download the Telstra Air App for automatic access to the Telstra Air Network. The Telstra Air Network is open and public. We recommend that you don't send or receive sensitive personal information or carry out activities like Internet Banking.
If you reach your Telstra Air data allowance, you can't access a Telstra Air hotspot until the start of your next billing cycle.
