The Iridium Satellite Network

Iridium’s crosslinked mesh architecture creates a web of coverage encompassing 100% of the planet from Low-Earth Orbit, providing low-latency, weather resilient services unlike any other satellite provider. No other network matches the reach, coverage, and reliability of Iridium. At only 780 kilometres from the Earth, Iridium’s LEO network means pole-to-pole coverage, shorter transmission paths, stronger signals, lower latency, and shorter registration time than with GEO satellites.

Iridium’s global constellation is supported by an extensive ground infrastructure that ensures the high reliability and capacity of the communications network through multiple layers of redundancy and back-up systems for all critical functions. Interconnected by advanced fibre-optic and broadband satellite links, the Iridium ground infrastructure consists of the Satellite Network Operating Centre (SNOC), Ground Stations, and Technical Support Centre, which together provide terrestrial connections for mobile satellite voice and data; network command, control, and monitoring; and technical support.

Things you need to know

Coverage on the Iridium network: To use your service, your Handset must be in the coverage area of the Iridium satellite network system in Australia or in other countries where satellite devices can be lawfully used. Coverage is available where there is a clear, wide direct line of sight between your handset and the sky. To use the service, the antenna of your Handset must be pointing straight up with clear line of sight to a wide view of the sky. The quality of service may be affected by things such as the atmosphere, environment and surrounds, including where there is a narrow view of the sky due to things such as thick canopy cover, being in a narrow gorge or between dense tall buildings. The service cannot be used from indoors without connection to an outside building antenna. 'Australia' includes up to 200 nautical miles out to sea and all Australian external territories except Antarctica. Currently, Iridium’s products, services, hardware, software and technical data may not be exported or re-exported, either directly or indirectly, to the following U.S. embargoed or restricted* destinations, or to companies or citizens/nationals of these destinations: Cuba, Iran, North Korea*, Sudan, or Syria*, without prior authorisation from the applicable U.S. Government agency (BIS and/or OFAC) and Iridium's Export Compliance Department. This list of embargoed/sanctioned destinations is subject to change at any time, and current information should be obtained directly from the appropriate U.S. government agencies. © Iridium Communications Inc.

Emergency Services: To access emergency services from within Australia, you can call 000 if you have an active SIM card in your Handset. If you do not have an active SIM card in your Handset you can access emergency services from within Australia by calling 112. When outside Australia, you need to dial the emergency services number for the country you are in.

Handsets: You must use an approved Iridium certified handset to establish a connection to the Iridium satellite network. Any unauthorised tampering of Iridium devices may result in your service being unusable on a temporary or permanent basis.

Roaming outside of Australia: To make a call on your TMS phone outside of Australia to another international country, you’ll need to use an International Number Format. When roaming outside of Australia, you can't call 000, 190, 1800, 13, 12 or Directory Assistance. You can call 112 and connect to that country's emergency service even without a SIM card. When outside Australia, you need to dial the emergency services number for the country you are in.

Numbering: Telstra Mobile Satellite services are assigned a satellite number, which is 10-digits and begins with 01471, and not the standard cellular mobile number range. Mobile number portability and migrations from Telstra Mobile Satellite to non-Telstra Mobile Satellite, and vice versa, are not compatible.

Billing: Telstra Mobile Satellite services are unable to be billed on the same bill with services of any other type other than Telstra Mobile Satellite.
