Telstra set to expand 4G mobile services in Newcastle

Media Release, 24 April 2012

Telstra today announced the second phase of its 4G technology roll-out in Newcastle which will see ultra-fast 4G mobile coverage extending into a number of new suburbs in the coming months.

Telstra Area General Manager Chris Cusack said the upcoming expansion would bring 4G coverage to suburbs such as Broadmeadow, Callaghan, Georgetown, Jesmond, Kotara East, Lambton, Mayfield, Mayfield West, Waratah and Waratah West.

“Telstra’s continued investment in the network means more residents and businesses can soon experience some of the fastest mobile internet speeds available anywhere in the world.

“The leap in internet speeds available on 4G means customers can stream HD video and music over the internet, download songs faster, video chat with fewer interruptions and enjoy rich internet content traditionally confined to a fixed  home or business internet connection when they’re on the move,” Mr Cusack said.

Mr Cusack said the 4G coverage expansion was scheduled to commence shortly and when completed later this year would more than double the 4G coverage available in the Newcastle area complementing Telstra’s existing 3G coverage which reaches 99.3 per cent of the Hunter population.

“There is no better time for locals to upgrade to a 4G device on the Telstra Mobile Network. Since launching 4G in Newcastle last September, Telstra has quickly expanded its 4G product range to include advanced smartphones, a 4G tablet and three mobile broadband devices including a 4G Mobile Wi-Fi which allows customers to share a 4G network connection with up to five devices simultaneously. And soon customers will be able to enjoy 4G speeds on these devices in more places around Newcastle.

To mark the upcoming expansion of the 4G coverage, Telstra is setting up a 4G experience zone in Marketown Shopping Centre this week where Newcastle residents can get hands on with the latest 4G smartphones, tablets and mobile broadband devices. The zone is open 9am to 5pm Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and is located directly outside the Telstra Store.

Telstra also today confirmed it had reached a milestone in its national 4G technology roll out with 4G coverage now available in more than 100 regional and metropolitan centres Australia wide – including the nation’s eight capital city CBDs.

*With capable devices in 4G coverage areas customers can experience typical download speeds of 2Mbps – 40Mbps, and typical upload speeds of 1Mbps – 10Mbps in all capital CBDs (meaning within 5km from the GPO), associated airports and selected regional areas (meaning 3km of the regional town centre).  In other coverage areas, customers will automatically switch over to Telstra’s fastest available 3G speeds. Actual speeds may vary due to factors such as location, distance from the base station, local conditions, concurrent users, hardware and software configuration.
