Telstra announces rollout of nbn services across Pilbara

Media Release, 19 April 2018

The arrival of the nbn network across the Pilbara region will deliver huge opportunities for thousands of local homes and businesses to transform the way they operate.

More than 6,300 homes and businesses in the Pilbara will be able to access the speedy nbn network via Fibre to the Node (FTTN) and Fibre to the Premise (FTTP) technology within the coming month. The towns coming online include Newman, Tom Price, Wickham, Paraburdoo and Exmouth.

Telstra Area General Manager Boyd Brown said the nbn network is one of the most talked about and exciting digital developments to arrive in Western Australia. He said the highly anticipated rollout of the nbn across the Pilbara region will mark the beginning of a new digital era for the region.

“Individuals, communities and businesses are becoming increasingly digital-dependent. We’re streaming more video content than ever, uploading huge amounts of data and, by 2021 households are expected to own an average of 30 connected smart devices,” he said.

“The rollout of the nbn network will help Telstra to support this surge in data demand and allow locals to make their households smarter and their businesses more efficient.

“It means one of the kids will be able to stream Netflix on the tablet while another watches a movie on the Telstra TV, and the parents can be working online on the laptop, all at the same time with a reliable connection.”

Mr Brown said to assist locals better understand how to connect to the nbn and get the immediate benefits of fast broadband a team of Telstra specialists will be travelling across the Pilbara visiting the towns and conducting one-on-one sessions to answer any questions. Those locations and times are listed below.

Telstra is also reminding those living and working in the Pilbara region that switching to the nbn network will not happen automatically. Locals have 18 months to contact their chosen network provider to arrange moving across to the new network, after which existing landline, data and internet services will be disconnected under Federal Government regulations.

“We want everybody in the Pilbara area to be able to start benefitting from the nbn network as soon as possible. So, now is the time to speak to your chosen network provider about kick starting the switch on process,” said Mr Brown.
