31 Jan update: Communication impacts due to flooding in Queensland

Media Release, 31 January 2013

The following is the latest update on Telstra’s efforts to restore telecommunications services in Central and Northern Queensland following severe weather and flooding that has heavily impacted that region.

Technicians continue to combat difficult conditions across the state to restore as many services as possible. With repairs made to cable damage caused earlier in the week as a result of the severe weather and flooding, technicians are now contending with access issues and power outages in many locations which continue to impact services.

As it stands the power issues are continuing to cause service disruptions in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Gladstone, Kingaroy, Rockhampton, Dalby Springbrook, Oxenford, Beaudesert, Sunshine, Nambour, Toowoomba, Biloela, Goondiwindi, Cunningham, Cleveland, Goondiwindi, Cunningham, Cleveland, Ayr, Ingham, Townsville and Weipa.

As power is restored in these areas, we expect to see progressive restoration of services. Our services status page is being updated with real time information as these restoration efforts take place to help people stay up to date.

To manage these efforts, additional Telstra technicians have flown in from around the country to assist with work in the impacted communities. Furthermore, a team of experts are working around the clock monitoring the network and co-coordinating all recovery efforts.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide the community with updates through our social media channels, Telstra on Facebook and Twitter, in addition to regular updates to the media.

Telstra apologises for any inconvenience to our customers and wishes to assure them that we are doing everything we can to get them connected as soon as possible.
