The Telstra Wireless IP solution is designed for businesses with staff who don't work in a traditional office, such as sales, technical and repair staff, transport and courier operators, health workers and other 'power users'. It is ideal for anyone requiring access to business-critical information such as scheduling, inventory availability, order entry, customer records and email.

With a GPRS mobile phone and a compatible laptop or Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), Wireless IP offers greater data throughput than a traditional timed or circuit switched mobile data connection. Users can be online, even while receiving a regular mobile voice call, and only pay for the data sent and received, rather than the time spent dialled in.

Wireless IP is also the perfect solution for remote monitoring of equipment and infrastructure, typically expensive and critical assets that are beyond the reach of traditional physical data connections, such as vending machines, security and burglar alarms, trucks and pumps.

GPRS is a new value-added data service that enables information to be continually sent and received across the Telstra Mobile GSM mobile phone network.

When using a compatible handset or device, GPRS offers mobile workers a range of data functionality and services including:

• WAP and SMS mobile services
• Internet and Intranet browsing
• Email
• FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and Telnet data connections

Wireless IP offers both flexible and high-speed communications. Rather than making a dedicated data call for a fixed period of time, GPRS transmits data across the GSM network via packets. This delivers far greater efficiency, and throughput up to 40Kbps - more than four times faster than a traditional GSM data call (9.6 Kbps).

The solution provides secure connectivity to your corporate data with no time wasted in establishing a dial-up modem connection. This immediacy is an important feature for time-critical applications such as reservation systems, stock enquiries or credit card authorisations, where it would be unacceptable to keep a customer waiting, even for 30 extra seconds.

The solution is also cost effective. Usage is charged by the amount of data sent and received, rather than the time spent dialled in.
