If you have used International Roaming on your service in the past, you don't need to re-apply. It will always be on your service, ready to use when you travel overseas1.

If you're travelling overseas with a smartphone (such as a BlackBerry® or an Apple® iPhone™), you need to be aware of your potential data usage and the charges you could incur. See our Smartphones & Travelling Tips page for advice.

Apply Online

The quickest and easiest way to get International Roaming on your service is via our online form. Please apply online at least three days before departure.

Please be aware that this form is not applicable for the following types of services:

  • Pre-Paid – International Roaming is automatically activated and there is no need to apply
  • Mobile Broadband – please follow these steps
  • Business – please go to the Telstra Business International Roaming application form
  • Enterprise and Government – please contact your Customer Care team on 1800 730 053.

Things to do before you leave

  • Make sure International Roaming is available where you're going and that your device will work on the overseas carrier's network. See Pricing & Compatibility.
     
  • Understand the International Roaming charges for calls and data usage, including MessageBank® access, SMS and MMS messaging. Be aware that the cost of using these services overseas is not included in our standard plans (including data plans). See Pricing & Compatibility for details.
     
  • Make sure the following call barring settings are removed before you leave, as per your user manual:
    • all incoming calls, when roaming overseas
    • outgoing international calls
    • outgoing calls, except to Australia, when roaming overseas
    For more information whilst in Australia:
    • for Consumer customers, call 12 5109
    • for Business customers, call 13 2000 or your Telstra Account Executive
    • for Telstra Enterprise and Government customers, call 1300 TELSTRA (1300 835 787) or your Telstra Account Executive.
    • Please note the number to call whilst roaming overseas is the International Roaming Helpdesk on +61439125109. Please refer to the 'Things you need to know' section below for call costs.
  • To control costs, you may want to disable data access via your handset or take up an International Roaming Data Plan or Pack with an included data allowance.

Things you need to know

  1. You may need to reapply if your service has been disconnected for any reason in the past six months, including temporary or permanent disconnection for non-payment.
  2. Calls to the International Roaming Helpdesk +61439125109 on a Telstra mobile while roaming overseas are charged at a flat fee (22.73 cents GST-free for Post Paid and maximum 50c GST- free for Pre Paid), calls to the International Roaming Helpdesk from a non-Telstra device or telephone service will incur normal international telephone charges. Calls to Telstra Customer Service on 12 5109 (or 12 5111) on a Telstra mobile from within Australia are 25c GST inclusive.
