The Telstra Mobile Network

Greater Coverage

Ever wondered why some mobiles don't work as well as others in certain places? Coverage and signal strength are important factors. The Telstra Mobile Network is Australia's largest 3G and 4G enabled mobile network covering 99.3 per cent of the Australian population across more than 2.3 million square kilometres. That means you'll enjoy coverage across more than double the area of any other mobile network in Australia.

Faster Speeds in more places

We are working hard to make sure our customers remain at the forefront of mobile connectivity. Telstra continues to lead the way in providing Australians access to all the latest 3G HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) and 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) speed technologies. Telstra not only offers the largest 4G coverage – it is backed by the largest 3G coverage so you can connect faster in more places.

Greater Reliability

Not all mobile networks are created equal. With Telstra, you will be able to enjoy a more reliable national mobile network. Our award recognised mobile network has more coverage sites connected to a fibre based, Ethernet-enabled backhaul than any other mobile network. This means you are able to enjoy more coverage with greater speeds and reliability in more places across Australia.

HD voice enabled

We want you to have the best mobile experience possible. The Telstra Mobile Network is the only mobile network in Australia enabled with new high definition voice technology. HD Voice not only delivers crystal clear voice quality it also provides noise suppression features making your HD-compatible handset much more effective in noisy environments such as on the train, in crowded places or in heavy traffic. Customers calling between HD-compatible phones on the Telstra Mobile Network can access the higher quality calls at no extra cost.

What is 4G?

4G is the latest in mobile technology that gives you access to some of the fastest download and upload speeds available. 4G lets you do things like video streaming, web browsing and online multi-tasking faster than before in 4G coverage areas.

Enjoy more 4G coverage on the Telstra Mobile Network

The Telstra Mobile Network has the largest 4G coverage in Australia – available in more than 100 metropolitan and regional centres, including all capital cities. It currently covers more than 40 per cent of the Australian population.

Our 4G coverage will continue to grow. By the end of June 2013, we plan to cover two-thirds of the Australian population with Telstra's super-fast 4G.

Why is Telstra 4G better?

Your 4G device will go faster in more places when you connect it to the Telstra Mobile Network. You'll be able to enjoy typical 4G download speeds of 2Mbps – 40Mbps and typical upload speeds of 1Mbps – 10Mbps, available in more places than on any other network in Australia.

What's more, 4G capable devices seamlessly operate in both 4G and 3G coverage areas. For Telstra 4G customers this means they can continue to enjoy faster speeds in more places, even when they move outside Telstra's 4G coverage area, with typical 3G download speeds that include 1.1 – 20Mbps available across 80 per cent of the Australian population.

In other coverage areas, customers will automatically switch over to Telstra's fastest available 3G HSPA enabled network that include HSPA+ and HSPA+ Dual Channel. What is 3G HSPA?

3G HSPA is a third generation mobile technology capable of delivering faster download and upload speeds compared to earlier 3G and 2G technologies.

3G HSPA is deployed in various speed versions, including 3G HSPA+ and 3G HSPA+ Dual Channel which are faster than 3G HSPA. Telstra offers all these 3G HSPA speed versions across an area unmatched by any other mobile network in Australia. This means you will be able to access faster 3G speeds in more places across Australia.

Telstra provides 3G HSPA services in the 850MHz frequency band across our entire mobile network. This is supported by 3G HSPA in the 2100MHz band in selected high traffic areas to boost capacity.

To fully enjoy the superior benefits of 3G HSPA on the Telstra Mobile Network it is important your device is capable of operating in the 850MHz and 2100MHz frequency bands.

Enjoy faster speeds in more places

The Telstra Mobile Network has the largest 3G HSPA+ Dual Channel enabled coverage with typical download speeds of 1.1 to 20Mbps across 80 per cent of the Australian population. Telstra also has the largest 3G HSPA+ coverage with typical download speeds of 550kbps to 8Mbps available across 97 per cent of the population. In remaining 3G coverage areas typical download speeds are 550kbps to 3Mbps.

Typical 3G customer upload speeds are 300kbps – 3Mbps in all capital cities and major regional areas covering more than 93 per cent of the population and 300kbps – 1Mbps in other coverage areas.

Telstra 3G and 4G operating seamlessly together

2G / GPRS network

GSM

Our GSM network provides coverage to more than 96 per cent of the Australian population and more than 600,000 square kilometres.

GSM is a great mobile network if you’re in a capital city with excellent in-building coverage, in a metropolitan area and if you’re an international traveller.

Mobile phone usage can sometimes be restricted or even impossible inside certain buildings, structures and some locations, notably within capital cities. Our GSM network has an extensive range of base stations inside many buildings and structures to help provide coverage within some of these difficult areas. See our coverage

You can also take advantage of information and data services via GPRS. With a GPRS capable mobile phone you can access information services, the internet as well as send and receive emails.

And with extensive international roaming capability in more than 170 countries (including nearly 130 with GPRS), GSM is also a great choice for international travellers, helping to keep you in touch when travelling overseas.

GPRS

Get convenient access to the internet, email and other online services through your GPRS-capable mobile phone.

General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) is a packet-based wireless communication service that provides fast data rates and continuous connection to the internet for GPRS capable devices. It offers the same coverage as our GSM network.

Your GPRS handset may need to be configured to work on our GPRS network. See our Mobile phone set-up
