"The Next G™ network has enabled me the life that I have long desired - to live on my sailing catamaran, cruise the Whitsundays and keep my finger on the pulse of my business, friends and the world."
– John Nayler, eCentral

Wake up in the Whitsundays with the Telstra Next G™ network

Combining a love for the sea and sharp business sense with the Telstra Next G™ high speed mobile broadband service allows internet consultant and online troubleshooter John Nayler to live a life many people dream about.

A busy workday will find John glued to his laptop screen, using his mobile phoneon the Next G™ network to send and receive large files from his internet clients, identifying problems and developing on-the-spot solutions.

The amazing difference is that Nayler's 'office' is a 12-metre catamaran called Dot Com, which is more often than not moored in a sheltered tropical bay in the idyllic Whitsunday Islands.

And when work is finished, the laptop lid snaps shut and it's out with the fishing rods to catch the sunset and an evening meal.

"I live in the Whitsundays and the ocean is my office," said Nayler. "Twelve months ago I imagined moving my life onto the water. Six months ago I moved onto the boat, and shortly after the Telstra Next G™ network delivered the technology that actually makes this lifestyle possible for me."

Mobile options were possible with the Next G™ network

Nayler's business eCentral provides specialist at-call service and support to select clients in the development and management of internet site performance and functionality.

Until now, Nayler's dream of living and working from his yacht faced one major obstacle: finding a reliable high-speed mobile broadband connection.

"I extensively tested a range of other technologies," Nayler said. "All that gear is now in the bottom drawer because it just hasn't worked for me; it hasn't allowed me to transfer large files."

Previously, Nayler had to return to harbour for client contact work, and was less able to provide the access and fast service so valued by his customers.

"My work is all tucked away in two devices: my notebook computer and my mobile phone," he said. "That's the way people stay in touch with me, regardless of whether it's friends, family or my clients."

Telstra Next G™ network: servicing clients from the foredeck

Nayler was one of the earliest adopters of the Telstra Next G™ network and has never looked back since he made the switch.

"Having used the Next G™ network since inception, nothing has so fundamentally changed the way that I live and work," he said. "From on board my 12-meter catamaran home sailing amongst the Whitsunday Islands, the Next G™ network enables me to stay in touch with clients, friends and family using my LG TU500 phone."

The high-speed broadband access delivered by the Next G™ network allows Nayler to work quickly, providing rapid responses to client issues.

"We are using the Telstra Next G™ card plugged into laptops and the speed is excellent," Nayler said. "If an email arrives from a client and it's something that needs to be changed, I can action it straight away.

"I look at my client's internet site, I look at how their business operates, I get in and really understand what they're trying to achieve and how they go about it.

"Recently while out on the water, I had a client site stop working. I was able to connect to the internet and make the necessary changes immediately and then return to my fishing."

Reliable technology

"With the Next G™ network I'm able to stay connected, move large files around, and make the clients feel like I'm there for themwhen they need me," said Nayler.

"And the support for the Next G™ network has been very, very good. The technical support guys are friendly and helpful and have shown a good knowledge of the product.

"I use the full range of technologies to stay in touch with my clients – phone, text, video conferencing, webcam and email – all via the Next G™ network."

The bandwidth of the Next G™ network has also helped Nayler open up new opportunities including a joint venture business, ChannelWhitsunday.com.

"This unique online television station requires frequent upload of videos up to 100MB in size, which I can do from onboard using my Next G™ Turbo Card," he explained.

"The Telstra Next G™ network has demonstrated the speed and coverage to overcome a number of challenges of my lifestyle and opened up new business ventures. I can do my work from many places around the island group; I can be in a coffee shop in Airlie Beach, I can be with clients in Sydney, I can be at the airport in Brisbane and be seamlessly connected to friends, family and my business clients.

"Now I always work from the boat. I get to anchor in the most beautiful places in Australia, do a spot of fishing and then clear my email. It's great.

"The Next G™ network allows me the freedom to do what I want, when I want. It's really living the dream."
